Though it split viewers, Jennifer Lawrence performed brilliantly in the horror movie Mother!. Ari Aster's new A24 sci-fi comedy will correct the record.
Set to star in the dark comedy Why Don't You Love Me, Jennifer Lawrence seems like the ideal follow-up to her divisive 2017 horror film, Mother!. Renowned for her adaptability and range of performance, the Oscar-winning actress's most recent project is already creating a lot of buzz. Lawrence lately experimented in comedy with 2023's No Hard Feelings, thus this new project seems like a fascinating path for the star.
Though there isn't much official knowledge on the dark comedy, Why Don't You Love Me will draw on Paul B. Rainey's 2023 Sci-fi graphic novel of the same name. Rainey's work will be adapted by screenwriter Robert Funke, and Lawrence will be producer alongside her main part.
The Why Don't You Love Me graphic novel chronicles the tale of a couple unhappy in their marriage who come to see that this is not the life they desire for themselves and question if something might be wrong with their reality upon learning of an approaching nuclear war. This makes it reminiscent of Mother!, written and directed by Darren Aronofsky and also about a married couple grappling with reality.
Furthermore involved in Why Don't You Love Me is Ari Aster, well-known for his work on the disturbing horror films Hereditary and Midsommar. He and Aronofsky always bring their own unique approach to projects, so ensuring that, like Mother!, Why Don't You Love Me will be far from traditional.
Given the parallels, Why Don't You Love Me looks like the perfect follow-up for Lawrence following Mother!. Though the movie wasn't for everyone, most agreed her performance was exceptional. This is great for Why Don't You Love Me since Lawrence can draw on this role that pushes limits and tackles yet another difficult character in a movie that seems likely to play with views of reality.
When Mother! debuted in 2017, it generated controversy and discussion and rose to become among the most watched movies of the year. Renowned for adding unsettling and surreal components to his work, Aronofsky broke with conventional narrative forms using allegorical storytelling techniques. Aronofsky stretched the possibilities of Mother!, and the risk didn't exactly pay off.
Mother!'s use of biblical analogues and its audacious and provocative investigation of ideas spanning creation, destruction, and the human condition generated the most debate about the movie. For some, the allegorical narrative and unusual story structure was too far from the mainstream, making it too vague and challenging for broad viewers. Aronofsky's film's extreme portrayal of violence attracted other critics' close inspection as well. Receiving both boos and a standing ovation at its premiere, its upsetting images and strong themes split viewers and critics.
Lawrence has a number of forthcoming films scheduled already that would suggest the actress is ready to challenge her limits even more. Including Why Don't You Love Me on the list, she seems ready to clear the Mother! debate with the ideal follow-up.
