Saturday Night Live (SNL), the historic comedy sketch show is currently celebrating its 50th season with a series of events. The show’s milestone has generated attention and discussion on where to find their current shows.
No, Saturday Night Live is not new tonight, January 11 2025. NBC is re-airing the episode hosted by John Mulaney and featuring musical guest Chappell Roan. The current series has been on break after completing part of its show scheduling from the 50th year. They will begin airing more new content after the hiatus concludes with a new set of events for the celebration.
The re-aired episode highlights John Mulaney's stand-up opening monlogue which often takes inspiration from his personal life along with the series "New York musical," a comical piece set in a Port Authority Duane Reade. It also included a more emotion driven skit focused on an astronaut monkey called “Beppo”. Musical performances were also presented by Chappell Roan giving two well liked musical numbers on that show. These components made the original show successful while entertaining.
Saturday Night Live’s 50th year has prompted some large plans with various special shows documentaries as well as other events. NBC has already planned multiple streaming opportunities across many platforms, most of which are available on Peacock.
A major component of the shows success was to do an online selection of classic sketches from all previous seasons chosen by the show's creators. The behind the scenes information available in connection to these selections can be found on NBC's website. Examples that have been made available are "Papyrus" "Celebrity Jeopardy," and "(Do It on My) Twin Bed" which allows the new viewers to understand where some key aspects of the current show have been inspired by.
A four-part docuseries called “Beyond Saturday Night” is to premiere on Peacock January 16 and will show inside of what it is to make SNL a popular production. Interviews with those that have contributed their talents show the various processes and inside secrets on what has helped this show over the years. This will include former cast members, the writing process and details around creating each episode.
On January 27, NBC will air a documentary, "Ladies & Gentlemen ... 50 Years of SNL Music" which is co-directed by Questlove. The documentary aims to showcase many musical highlights that have made a special impact. It hopes to deliver new information into memorable musical sketches from all of its 50 years to continue expanding interest.
A three-hour special broadcast, "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" is set for Sunday February 16 showcasing all different cast members guest hosts and popular moments throughout all of the 50 years. The show is said to include both previously aired events from many episodes while highlighting some aspects of what it takes to be part of the production team.
Both the current shows and previous ones are readily available across several streaming platforms. New content will become available once the show continues with a second half of the 50th season.
Viewers can watch episodes on NBC during its normal Saturday broadcast while it is live and on Peacock to stream the day after air. There is also the opportunity to view past episodes as all previous seasons are available to view for anyone with a streaming subscription. Additional methods to watch include DirecTV Stream, YouTube TV, FuboTV and Hulu + Live TV.
SNL features several unique people both veteran and new. A key part of the current 50th series is the returning Colin Jost and Michael Che at the "Weekend Update" desk. However their are a number of those that have become iconic cast member’s within their years.
Current players like Mikey Day and Chloe Fineman make their mark along with returning actors Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang. Those that have become “Featured players” have also had roles such as Marcello Hernández James Austin Johnson, Michael Longfellow, Sarah Sherman and Devon Walker all returned. However “SNL” also included new cast members such as Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline creating opportunities for growth within the cast. Past talent including Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney and Chloe Troast did not return for this 50th season.
"Saturday Night Live" is planning to continue their 50th season which will have Dave Chappelle hosting and GloRilla as the musical guest on January 18th as its first new airing of 2025.
