Heartstopper Season 3: Ben Hope's Absence Explained

Heartstopper Season 3: Why Ben's Gone (and Why It's Perfect!)

Heartstopper Season 3: Ben's Absence and the Power of Unfinished Business

Heartstopper, that incredibly popular coming-of-age LGBTQ+ romance on Netflix, had a major character missing in season 3: Ben Hope (Sebastian Croft)! His absence sparked plenty of discussion – mainly because people hoped for a redemption arc. But Alice Oseman, the show's creator, makes it clear why he's gone—and why that choice is brilliant. This entire storyline highlights how a potentially satisfying moment – a chance for some much needed redemption - is strategically avoided because this moment wasn't the right story; nor necessarily the right narrative choice. Ben's absence ultimately benefits everyone involved – and this kind of intentional rejection showcases exactly just how strongly Oseman felt and thought about her particular story and themes.

The early seasons of Heartstopper, showed Ben as a truly complex, deeply problematic teen— struggling with his own bisexuality and that inner conflict resulted in bullying behavior towards those surrounding him; especially Charlie (Joe Locke), a fellow student who's the first victim of Ben’s actions and he is later his first romantic partner.

That relationship is intense; but only toxic for Charlie, made clearly evident within those key relationships between Ben and Charlie.  And this situation made some viewers hope Ben might redeem himself; however as we'll discover further into this article - Ben remains largely unimproved as far as personality and overall disposition - ultimately affecting those other narrative directions.

Ben's Exit: No Redemption, No Regrets

Ben’s final appearance before disappearing from Heartstopper?   He tries to apologize to Charlie. Yet even after explaining how difficult self-acceptance truly is for Ben  himself; he realizes his true identity and accepts those difficult realities – Charlie still rightfully rejects that apology! Why? As Oseman points out in that interview from Netflix - she wanted Ben's arc finished. She explains "Ben’s role in Heartstopper is now complete," explaining further "Ben can become a better person, but Charlie should not have to witness that, endorse it, or offer any forgiveness. And so he won't."

This decision highlights Oseman’s astute approach and showcases just how powerful she really is! The show emphasized a key theme which doesn’t rely on simply presenting easy resolutions to very difficult scenarios; the viewers watch a profoundly impacting storyline highlighting just why that kind of moment wouldn't necessarily work here, at this exact time – it does exactly what needs to be done within the entire narrative by refusing those simple narrative approaches typically seen in television series – rejecting it because Charlie has no obligation toward Ben's growth!

Ben’s absence opens the path to Charlie's personal growth! Rejecting Ben’s apology showed Charlie's strength;  a pivotal moment empowering Charlie; something only truly possible if he stands firm. His relationship with Nick (Kit Connor) has now the opportunity to become that much more wholesome, a much healthier, far better foundation based upon the realization that better and healthy relationships are possible. Charlie's journey really became far stronger after that important moment which showcases how he learned a great deal during this specific moment of reflection.

Alice Oseman praised Sebastian Croft's work: "I feel we found that line and I am so proud and honored that Sebastian has been a part of Heartstopper. I know that he'll go on to do incredible things, and I will be cheering from the sidelines all the way." That’s not idle chatter, folks. Croft continues excelling: This shows that the producers have confidence and are committed towards the individual and recognize just how amazing he is.

Since Heartstopper, Croft had acted in some very successful productions which include Get Away and How to Date Billy Walsh. Ben’s absence in Heartstopper season 3 was totally intentional and profoundly impactful. His unresolved issues created a new dynamic within the storytelling that highlighted Charlie’s recovery. The creators' deliberate choice makes his removal critical for Charlie's journey and a crucial element to consider; preventing the characters from merely relying on a potentially cheap narrative twist to advance a specific plot.  It also showcases Oseman's careful understanding regarding what made those characters so memorable, so valuable and powerful for many.

Even though many expected that satisfying Redemption Arc; those expectations aren’t necessarily things a good production will simply fulfill! In this particular case, preventing it makes for an incredibly successful and emotionally powerful conclusion, far more meaningful and important for its audiences!
