Futurama Season 13: Multiverse Mayhem or Missed Opportunity?

The animated sci-fi comedy Futurama is back and fans are going wild with the release of season 12, available on Hulu! This newest season's finale is one that has fans speculating wildly about the possibilities of Season 13. The writers decided to take this in a completely new direction and some serious changes took place, specifically around the introduction of a huge multiverse!

Futurama's Multiverse

The ending of season 12 features "Otherwise," which opened the door to explore this incredible and exciting new possibility. This gave Futurama the chance to explore a vast multiverse! It was a great turn but that also means the series has to deal with some major issues to keep the whole story well-paced.

What makes Futurama so enjoyable is that its storytelling is grounded in humor. While a huge multiverse adds plenty of potential, it risks diminishing some of these serious character moments. "The Graveyard of Ships," a rip in the multiverse, sets up these new possibilities!

Expanding The Series

The universe that Futurama lives in has never been confined, and there have been other mentions of various dimensions and realities. Season 5 even includes "The Farnsworth Parabox," giving fans the feeling that there's so much potential here! The episode "Otherwise," goes much further and offers a lot to discuss.

A major highlight is that this opens up some of those past plots that have always felt disjointed with one another.

  • This was so important! Since this introduces a multiverse this now acts as a solid explanation! There's this sense that a truly inventive storytelling could be ready to burst onto the screen!

For a series known for its originality. Introducing various versions of their beloved characters in past anthology episodes really helps to show that. This will give these stories a truly interesting direction!

Dealing With The Multiverse

While Futurama is an incredible show full of imagination some earlier efforts have ended in disappointing results.

  • There was an attempt at an entirely new universe with season 6's "Into the Wild Green Yonder," but it quickly fizzled out!
  • Season 12 also brings some really dramatic shifts which also did a bit of a backtrack!

This needs to be different this time around! Season 13, needs to follow this through or there is a risk that these writers are losing this chance for something truly original and will waste a fantastic possibility.

Even as this leads to other realities. The writers need to acknowledge the changes as this gives them an excellent moment to give the beloved characters amazing new journeys that explore these interesting Multiverses.

Avoiding Problems

What could really hurt Futurama's Multiverse plot? It's all about not taking away some really important factors!

Even though Futurama is always original. There was a problem about what it means for a character to die! The problem in the 31st century is that it has little to do with the plot's weight! That makes the risk, introducing tons and tons of various versions and character deaths could completely undo anything serious about death!

  • You see, "Otherwise" gave an interesting, almost perfectly sweet-bittersweet ending, that is very impactful but this also comes from giving weight to its characters. So making characters meaningful! That was really an excellent direction!

That kind of powerful focus needs to stay for any future episode and if Futurama doesn't want to have the same outcome of other shows, they might not want to follow that same route as Rick and Morty! What's interesting is how those multiverse adventures felt a lot more light-hearted, and while fans have fun. What matters in Futurama is how these characters have had meaning from the beginning. And for season 13, or any future seasons, using a multiverse means that needs to stay. Otherwise, the entire premise becomes a simple throwaway.

To recap, this series is in an amazing moment and this could just go even further!

The universe of Futurama could make their entire multiversal universe shine by utilizing the anthology series. They could build out and continue its previous storylines, even creating contrasts that build the universe! This gives Futurama a special way to bring these worlds to life with new twists!

The multiverse looks to offer exciting prospects! What will really happen in Futurama's multiverse, is all about not losing sight of the amazing and beloved crew. If these amazing characters become more relatable through heartfelt character moments it would keep the show truly relevant to fans all around!

So what we have here are possibilities for great storytelling and for the writers of Futurama, to use this multiverse and avoid those common traps that others might have fallen for. It’s a chance for Futurama to go into some previously unseen areas and give the series some exciting new plots, adding weight to the world of characters that fans love. Season 12 and "Otherwise," is an epic cliffhanger but there's still plenty to get excited for in the potential of season 13, that has fans eagerly waiting!
