Season 12 of Futurama has the animated sitcom's trademark absurdity, along with a throwback to an episode from Season 2 called "Anthology of Interest I." The Fing-Longer, a left glove with an enormously extended index finger, is a more low-tech innovation that steals the show in this episode, which centers upon Professor Farnsworth's What-If Machine.
In "The One Amigo," Professor Farnsworth's desire of creating the Fing-Longer comes true. Its goal is still comically absurd, even though it's slightly different from its original conception (now a right glove matching Farnsworth's skin tone). Farnsworth highlights the ridiculousness of the invention by using it to point at museum exhibits that are easily within his reach.
There are more references to previous seasons of Futurama besides the Fing-Longer. The sequence from Season 4, "Roswell That Ends Well," where Dr. Zoidberg eats the identical deviled egg twice, is brought to mind by Bender's visit to his ancestral home in Mexico. Doblando, Bender's cousin, is also introduced in this episode. He resembles Bender physically and has a characteristic robotic facial hair. Similar to Bender's twin Flexo from Season 2, Doblando's appearance draws attention to the subtle distinctions and parallels between Bender and his robotic counterpart.
Professor Farnsworth keeps coming up with new ideas, such as USB drives that look like teeth and reverse jetpacks. Even though these innovations are frequently overly complicated and unrealistic, they heighten the show's absurdity and hilarity.
The secret to Futurama's popularity is its ability to revisit people and topics while delivering consistently funny content. The show's writers have a talent for making realistic characters and scenarios while maintaining a creative and original sense of humor. Futurama's continuing appeal and ability to combine nostalgia with modern humor are demonstrated in Season 12.
