Futurama's Back, Baby, and They're Killing Everyone! (Again!)
It's great to see Futurama back on the screen after a 10-year break. Season 12 has been a riot so far, with plenty of new shenanigans for the crew of the Planet Express to get into. But even though these space cowboys have died several times in previous episodes, Futurama season 12 is keeping this morbid trend alive. The "Quids Game" episode just premiered, and holy smokes, it is totally a rip-off of "Squid Game!" (You know, the Netflix hit everyone's watching right now? Yeah, THAT show.)
You see, Leela is planning this epic birthday party for Fry on the Planet Express ship, but things get hilariously, violently wrong when they end up stuck on a crazy planet where they gotta play a bunch of games to survive. This isn't your typical carnival fun - think more along the lines of "deadly or don't survive." It's basically a Squid Game rip-off, right down to the giant doll from the show. Basically, every Futurama character except for one, (Hattie McDoogal, bless her heart) is killed off - but they come back to life later in a totally not shocking twist.
Why Futurama Just CAN'T Stop Killing Off Its Characters
And you thought this Squid Game rip-off was unique, right? Well, hold on to your space helmets because the Futurama creators love killing off all these awesome characters. This kind of "Rebirth" theme (the title of the revival's first episode!) goes way back. If you haven't caught up on all the Futurama madness, then you need to go watch the "Rebirth" episode - that's when all the characters were supposed to be "gone, gone, gone." And who survived? Our favourite ol' Professor Farnsworth! He had to use a super secret machine to bring everyone back, obviously. But think of the drama, man! Talk about your high stakes.
And before this, there were just so many smaller Futurama death instances sprinkled throughout the episodes. Bender, that awesome, rebellious robot, has kicked the bucket about 10 times - so we are pretty used to seeing his "death." But hey, there's never a shortage of funny "Bender's Death" moments! But, even in the "Squid Game" episode, Bender ended up surviving... like always! I guess when you're a talking, drinking, bad-ass robot, you can take anything!
Hulu's Futurama Revival: Your Next Watch-List Fix
Look, there is no other animated sci-fi series that's just as clever and funny as Futurama. With "Squid Game" hitting all those meme-able, cultural moments, and the new Futurama episodes taking the reins to rip off some of these moments with a satirical twist - that's what Futurama does so well, and they are really nailing the "Quids Game" with the perfect mixture of Futurama goodness.
So, when can you get your next dose of these insane adventures? You can go catch up with all of Futurama's wacky mishaps on Hulu, with new episodes airing on Thursday nights! So get ready to go on a trip through time, to explore outer space, and, maybe, experience your own mini-death moment with the characters of Futurama. If that doesn't scream "epic fun," then we don't know what does!
Just When You Thought Futurama Was Dying...
We've already had the "Rebirth" theme for the new Hulu revival and the entire crew of the Planet Express survived the insane "Quids Game." They survived the challenges (that we wouldn't even mention to protect some of those spoilers) and managed to get back to their typical life in the futuristic universe. But it has to be asked... how many times can they do this? Are these going to keep dying, then coming back?
Now you are wondering the same thing, right? Honestly, the question isn't just for the audience, we know these writers will be coming up with a whole lot more, possibly crazier ways to kill the Futurama crew. So what do you do? Grab a snack, settle into the couch, and watch how much "rebirth" is too much in Futurama!
