That awesome premiere of season 4 starts with a crazy high-speed chase! Soffer's Wes Mitchell, that newly-introduced character, arrives under intense pressure; his partner was recently shot by a criminal.  This shows that Mitchell isn’t just showing up in Hungary for a casual visit or merely as some planned, regular leadership substitution—there's some very strong intention behind this action!

Mitchell's got an agenda—he wants revenge on those international criminals who killed his partner. It’s all very intense, highly personal; creating the surprising yet compelling character motivations that completely shake things up! He has an attitude unlike that super cool, composed ForresterMitchell’s got a more reckless style – a much, much more rebellious spirit; which is expected when such characters were given these very unique, and personalized reasons to show up in this specific show!

And guess what?  He already had connections with the Fly Team.  Vo, the very impressive woman was previously Mitchell's mentee. This pre-established trust between the team's main female and that new male lead; this pre-existing bond gave this transition and acceptance from the viewers more credibility, making it not some random appointment! And she has reasons for accepting Mitchell as the new leader after resolving this crucial task—but she alone is not responsible for this choice. It rests with the entire team; and those kinds of relationships among various individuals who grew to become well-known through their characters on screen is what actually matters the most in all this situation!

Jesse Lee Soffer: From Jay Halstead to Wes Mitchell

Fans of Chicago PD will instantly recognize Soffer— he’s been the iconic Jay Halstead for ten years! The abrupt manner and manner of Halstead’s exit might’ve disappointed, and created unexpected situations but he totally opened a new doorway! That storyline involving Halstead’s transfer to Bolivia gave that character a logical reason to show up abroad; something which might actually have been surprisingly similar to Mitchell’s current circumstances and story; a necessary justification to provide his current reasoning! This actually provides those hooks necessary for generating suspense for both characters involved— even though the new plot given to Soffer and this newly generated character does appear incredibly different compared to Halstead; a character which Soffer portrayed amazingly well over the last many years!

But that’s awesome! This gives Soffer a huge chance; creating another new and really engaging character which is already shown in this season’s first episode. The team dynamic shifts as he gets his feet in place – that high-energy leadership makes for some totally fascinating interpersonal drama.  The audience however also remains completely unaware regarding many points—there remains huge room to continue creating many surprising storylines from different avenues.
