Season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution: Emily Prentiss's New Chapter
A new character introduction for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 was set up by an Emily Prentiss twist, which occurred more than 15 years after her character debuted. Intriguing new details about the BAU's unit chief were revealed in the second season finale of Criminal Minds. After Elle departed the program at the start of season 2, Emily made her debut on Criminal Minds in season 2. Emily has grown to be one of the most adored Criminal Minds characters since then, and the season 17 finale has only served to deepen her intricate backstory.
The Dark Arc of Prentiss and the Ghosts of the Past
When the squad was working to solve the "Gold Star" case in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2, Prentiss's character development became more difficult due to the demands of being the unit chief. Deputy Director Doug Bailey, whom Voit killed at the conclusion of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1, was another person Emily was mourning the loss of. Emily's determination to bring him justice and her partial self-blame for his death occasionally interfered with her judgment. During Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, Emily's chat with FBI Director Madison and a revelation through a flashback established several significant Prentiss storylines.
A Startling Disclosure: Emily's Sibling
Viewers have been able to piece together Emily Prentiss' complex, frequently grim backstory over the course of her tenure on Criminal Minds. This includes her early years as the daughter of a US ambassador and her time spent operating as an undercover agent for an Interpol task unit. However, despite all of the information that has been made public about Emily in the sixteen years since her debut on Criminal Minds, her younger sister was not brought up until the second season finale. Many viewers were shocked to learn that Emily had a younger sister via a flashback conversation with Doug.
Given the lack of mention of Emily's sister, many people believed Emily to be an only child. There have been stories involving the siblings of some of the other Criminal Minds characters. JJ's backstory heavily revolves around the suicide of her older sister, and there have been some significant storylines involving Tara's brother, Hotch's brother, and one of Penelope's stepbrothers. Being the only child made sense for Emily's personality because she appeared to have had a lonely upbringing and frequent travel due to her mother's job. The fact that Emily genuinely has a sister dispels a lot of the myths surrounding her upbringing.
Is Emily's Sister Going to be a New Season 3 Character?
In Criminal Minds: Evolution, Emily's sister's reveal came at an unusual time. Especially with the discussion of Emily's backstory, Criminal Minds had numerous opportunities to address it earlier. Although Emily has never shown a close relationship with her family, it's difficult to accept that her sister never made an effort to get in touch with her or that she wasn't important enough to mention during her tenure on Criminal Minds. In the second season finale of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Emily made a passing reference to her sister.
Still, the line is probably constructing something larger. It would make sense for the revelation to set up Emily's character introduction in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, but it wouldn't make sense to just declare Emily has a sister at random and never talk about it again. Jill Gideon, a new character with a past, has already been introduced in Criminal Minds: Evolution, and the addition of Emily's sister in Season 3 may provide complexity and an intriguing new plot. The revelation serves as a reminder that there is still a ton of information about the Criminal Minds characters to discover, even after nearly 20 years.
Is a Family Reunion Approaching?
Emily's sister wouldn't be the first Prentiss family member to appear in Criminal Minds: Evolution if she showed up in season 3. Emily's mother, Ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss, made an appearance in Criminal Minds season 2 episode 20, "Honor Among Thieves," not long after Emily made her debut. The relatively tense connection between the mother and daughter was visible to spectators when she traveled to Quantico in need of assistance with a case. Future episodes may have delved deeper into this intriguing relationship. But since season two of Criminal Minds, Elizabeth Prentiss hasn't made an appearance.
A lot of unanswered questions remain regarding the Prentiss family because Emily's father is mysteriously never mentioned in Criminal Minds. This might be the case because Kate Jackson's final role before leaving the business was as Elizabeth Prentiss. Although it is unlikely that Jackson will return to acting, a new actor could take on the role. Even after working on Criminal Minds for a long time, Emily Prentiss still manages to maintain her mystery. Since Emily's personal life is rarely discussed, the introduction of her sister and the return of her mother may show viewers a different side of the BAU unit chief. There should be a Prentiss family reunion in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3.
