Elrond's Hypocrisy: An in-depth Examination
Known for his wisdom and moral character in Tolkien's Middle-earth, the adored character of Elrond may find his reputation challenged in Amazon's The Rings of Power. Although Elrond, played by Hugo Weaving in Peter Jackson's adaptations and Robert Aramayo in The Rings of Power is seen as a lighthouse of morality, a crucial element in the San Diego Comic-con teaser for season two could present a different picture.
Elrond's Denunciation of Galadriel's Ring
The teaser shows Elrond and Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in a tense exchange where Galadriel puts one of the Rings of Power, Nenya, on her finger. Elrond's first response is a strong "No!" then an accusation that Galadriel, by donning a ring created by Sauron, has become a "collaborator". He tells her Sauron may acquire power from her use of the ring, but Galadriel brushes off his worries, asserting the ring guides her path.
Elrond's own ring: a paradox?
The irony is that, set thousands of years later in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elrond is shown sporting Vilya, one of the Three Rings of Power intended for Elves. Given his criticism of Galadriel's acts, this apparent hypocrisy calls questions.
The Authority and Narrative of the Three Rings
Examining the background of the Three Rings helps us to grasp Elrond's behavior. Though defeated during the siege of Barad-Dûr, Sauron still has residual influence by the time The Lord Of The Rings opens. His power is much diminished, though, thus his evil cannot corrupt the Three Rings. Elrond thus wears Vilya in an effort to offset Sauron's negative legacy by shielding Rivendell from possible hazards.
Elrond's Relationship with the Rings: Another Viewpoint
Elrond's relationship to the Rings of Power is honour-based rather than hypocritical. Emphasizing his dedication to stop Sauron from resurearing, he earlier tried to convince Isildur to destroy the One Ring. Although his choice to wear Vilya following his severe criticism of Galadriel would seem contradictory, it is important to keep in mind that his deep awareness of the Rings and his aim to protect Middle-earth drive his decisions. Elrond still embodies wisdom and morality even if his decisions would seem complicated.
