The conclusion of Dune: Part 2 begs the issue of Paul Atreides' final fate subject for debate. Though it seems he accepts his fate as the Kwisatz Haderach, a being with precognitive ability, his path is far from finished. Under Stilgar, the Fremen see Paul as a messianic person, their rescuer against the Harkonnens. Paul's visions of the future, however, point him a road of devastation and finally his own death.
Dune: Part 3 probably will explore Paul's inner struggle more thoroughly. Will he find a way to negotiate his destiny without giving in to the darkness, or will his precognitive powers cause him to grow the tyrant he fears? The sequel will revolve mostly on this investigation of free will against fate.
Throughout the Dune story, the Bene Gesserit—a strong group of women with great mental ability and genetic modification power—have been instrumental. Their attempt in Dune: Part 2 to shape Paul's fate backfires. Their impact over him has vanished, and their future in the empire is yet unknown.
Dune: Part 3 will probably show how the Bene Gesserit responded to Paul's authority and their attempts at control-reclamation. Will they keep aiming for political manipulation and breeding programs to help to control the universe? Alternatively will they be obliged to change and discover fresh approaches to exercise their influence in a society where Paul Atreides now rules? Surely, this dynamic will produce amazing alliances and conflicts.
Paul's path has been much aided by the Fremen, desert-dwelling people with amazing resilience and sophisticated survival skills. Driven by their faith in him as their saviour, in Dune: Part 2 they have become the backbone of his power. Arrakis's political scene has changed as a result of Paul's alliance with the Fremen.
Dune: Part 3 probably will look at the ramifications of this alliance. Under Paul's direction will the Fremen stay together? Will they be able to negotiate the complexity of a huge empire and keep their freedom? The Fremen's participation in the developing events will be vital since Paul's fate will be much entwined with their survival and impact.
