The massive crossover events of Dc Comics already seem pretty terrible: entire realities being erased, zombie heroes returned from the dead—the New 52. DC is raising the stakes for Halloween, though, with an anthology of fresh horror stories set during catastrophes including Infinite Crisis, Zero Hour, Flashpoint, and more. Dc Comics has unveiled DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis #1, a new Horror Anthology including in-continuity stories "set during the events of crises past," in their September solicitations. Though the teaser information promises that the stories inside will be true horror, the cover by artist Dan Hipp gives the anthology a lighthearted, campfire story vibe.
For the anthology, DC has assembled a Justice League of authors and painters. Among others, Dan DiDio, Rachel Pinnelas, Rex Ogle, and others will spin horrific stories like the Scarecrow rendering Gotham even more terrible on Blackest Night. Dark shadows and tension layouts will be added by artists such as M.L. Sanapo, Sid Kotain, and Jordi Tarragona to those stories hinted at above, such Nightwing learning he can fix the Crisis on Infinite Earths – all he has to do is die. For everyone engaged, these events already have great stakes, so Horror side stories mean the terror are turned up as well.
Readers can access Crisis-level events including the legendary Crisis on Infinite Earths by legends Marv Wolfman and George Pérez both online on DC Universe Infinite and in gathered editions from DC Comics. This series builds on DC's prior Christmas Anthology triumphs. During Black History Month and Pride Month respectively, DC Power and DC Pride have been explosive hits. DC's How to Lose a Guy Gardner in 10 Days #1, a fan-favorite Valentine's Day anthology in 2024, too drew on a movie from the early aughts. Rom-coms from the '90s and 2000s clearly inspired the tales included in this anthology, hence I Know What You Did Last Crisis might carry on the trend by drawing some of its inspiration from movies like Scream and Final Destination.
Although Eijikure and Nicola Scott's gorgeous variants cover release give nothing of a frightening feeling. DC might be designing additional variations and holding them back to leap frighten readers nearer Halloween. Readers may stand to re-read some of these iconic events while waiting for this anthology to really appreciate the terror these fresh side stories will offer. Maybe the greatest place to start as DC is re-releasing Crisis on Infinite Earths. Knowing their past is more crucial than ever since DC Comics is going all-in on parallel universe stories with its heroes in tandem with the rebirth of Elseworlds.
