Dark Matter Season 1: Not A Fulfilling Conclusion Just Yet
Remember Apple TV+’s series based on Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter? That mind-bending, multiverse story about a guy who literally gets thrown into different realities? The Series’ final episode left viewers wanting more, but some folks have mixed opinions on that whole ‘not quite conclusive’ thing.
Now, you've got the star of the show, Joel Edgerton, weighing in. Edgerton, who plays Jason Dessen, is like, "If we don’t get a second season, I'm totally cool with that - we wrapped it up so perfectly". Okay, here's the deal - that kind of feels like Edgerton’s just being super diplomatic. It was like, ‘this show got some love, maybe that’s good enough.’ However, we aren’t quite there, dude. We’re talking about a story with cliffhangers and big open-ended stuff – Ending a story like that just before those big mysteries start being revealed? That's no way to make fans happy!
Those Cliffhangers Are Going to Bug Fans
Let's back up for a minute. We've got this book called Dark Matter by Blake Crouch. That book had a super-strong story, but in a way, a little self-contained, with those satisfying book-ending chapters, you know? It’s just a story that had everything you needed to say it’s finished.
It might’ve been more clever than it was bold for Crouch (he’s both writer and director of the show) to put some big question marks and those “uh-oh-more-to-come” things at the end of Season 1. But he put it out there, like, ‘Let’s see what happens! ’ And what’s going to happen is viewers want those answers, they need the story to keep going. A second season’s the perfect move! Now if we don't get another season, everyone is going to be furious, which doesn't feel fulfilling, just more frustrated!
How Could the Show Have Wrapped Up Season 1?
I think it was pretty amazing to adapt Dark Matter! And, hey, there was even a little something-something extra in those added scenes for the TV Series – they did a really great job of expanding on those books. There’s no argument here: The cast and everyone working behind the scenes really did a killer job making the show amazing! It was almost like the story wasn’t meant to just have one chapter!
However, the truth is Dark Matter would have been amazing if it just followed the story of the book - It didn’t have to push those extra storylines in those final scenes to set things up for a next season! Now that they’re hanging things in suspense, it just makes it feel incomplete and maybe a little confusing. Why tease a future we don’t know about?!
What Does a Dark Matter Season 2 Even Mean?
Dark Matter Season 1 brought more storylines to the book - new characters, the ‘we’re-living-in-a-different-universe’ thing, which wasn’t a super surprise because those alternate realities and storylines can go on for a whole lotta seasons, even decades!
But with those final scenes, the series sort of opened the door for new stories that weren’t actually in the book. What would that even be? How would they keep things moving? There would have to be all-new story creation which would be crazy impressive but maybe kind of tough when you already have a really satisfying book-end in the novel! But hey, that doesn’t mean we can't just enjoy the original, so far. Those final scenes have got a lot of people talking, and that could even lead to those fan theories coming to life, if we’re super lucky!
The Multiverse in Dark Matter: Hope for the Future
You wanna talk about ‘potential’, because everyone’s going crazy talking about ‘what ifs?’ after that Ending. They were just starting to really get into all those complicated realities and possibilities! The final scene was just, well, so messed up and thrilling!
There’s something about how Dark Matter shows us that even if you’re super confident about the reality you’re in – your past, the future – there’s always another twist, another world. I guess that’s how a lot of fans feel, because they’re now pretty anxious about if it all will come back again!
Will Dark Matter Ever Be Renewed?
Here's the thing. The entire Dark Matter crew had so much fun making those first episodes, that it was probably a dream come true! They took a fantastic book, got an incredible cast, made something awesome.
That being said, a lot of people still need to see the series before making a call about if Dark Matter’s going to have another season! If they do make another season, well, that would be a major win! And for now, maybe it's not about those open-ended stories, it's about enjoying a pretty fantastic first season, one with a lot of thought-provoking moments!
