Betty Gilpin has become a popular actress noted for her captivating on-screen presence and talent for character acting across various genres. From comedic to intense dramatic roles her abilities as a performer showcase a strong connection between herself and the story she is telling.
Although she is best known from her recent appearance in American Primeval she had many roles that have been key in paving her path. Gilpin’s versatility shines as she takes on roles from series to movies.
She made a big impression from her previous acting credits including, her role as Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan on GLOW. These roles before her success are what established her range as an actress. With the roles she took she started to display her talent for taking both comedic characters and dramatic roles.
American Primeval is a limited series on Netflix that displays an interesting time line from the historical Mountain Meadows Massacre from the 1850s as it follows main character Sarah Rowell on a cross country journey. Along this path her skills as a survivalist have come to light and with the range that she can express emotion has also become apparent. Her role in the story displays how an every day person can get caught up in some of history's dark moments.
Gilpin plays Sara who is a mother determined to protect her son as she faces brutal circumstances in the old American West. She demonstrates how to be a complicated layered character while taking audiences to her lowest points but allowing them to experience her as someone very capable. Throughout her performance viewers get a look into someone who can portray fear and strength with equal ability creating a dynamic character.
“American Primeval” aims to display not just its main characters but how a story like this has many different facets that are needed to tell such a complete story. There are several themes in play from religion, power and control that make this tale unique. The plot also incorporates real life historical people while telling their fictional story.
The limited series draws attention to true events using real figures such as Jim Bridger and Brigham Young who had key roles in the western history. A specific event that inspires all is the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre showing how a variety of situations pushed these characters. By showing these different people with unique perspectives the show becomes more multi layered for viewing.
American Primeval uses its set design along with visual techniques that create a bleak setting which represents its difficult times for many different characters. This stylistic delivery elevated what some had come to think as usual tv moments to feel more raw and realistic.
While American Primeval has received a great audience reception critics seem more lukewarm on the project's unique approach. The mixed reception may also be a byproduct of new methods taken to highlight such important and complex issues within our nations history. The graphic depictions of violence are not for all but still serves to illustrate a story based in historical events.
The unique storyline does not shy away from uncomfortable realities which makes this series not for all types of viewers. Even though based on real history the creative delivery may be considered too much but was something the creator intended to showcase during the production.
There may be room for exploration in terms of second seasons for the show, due to the director’s desire for expanding on it. They have also stated they don't want to leave these unique and dynamic characters from public view. The exploration into if this will happen depends highly on Netflix and what they want for the series’ overall delivery.
There are many directions that may come from season two. It could follow the surviving members into their next adventures or even give new experiences into other untold portions of this part of history. Whichever way is chosen the possibilities are quite vast with much space to go even further into unexplored areas.
