Primeval is the title of the new six-part limited series, that combines themes of historical events with those that are a fictional re-telling of stories from 1857 in the American West. This exploration will showcase themes of violence, cultural conflicts, and survival along with a story set in a brutal frontier life.
The series looks at the battles that had taken place between multiple forces such as pioneers, Mormon Soldiers, Native Americans and the U.S. government as they collide with one another to gain control of the Utah Territory. This plot line puts all on edge as the stories show both fiction and elements based from real historical events .
The series is not a full recreation of history rather a telling of how the characters deal with a real historical setting and timeline. It aims to combine both elements. The shows plot contains many of what are considered both actual events with characters inspired from real people to explore what that meant in that era.
Several of the key figures and storylines of "American Primeval" have roots in the actual people of the past while some were created only for entertainment. However those who are more well known will take on different forms in how the show interprets each individual during the timeline. All combined create a cohesive timeline despite these variations.
The real life character Jim Bridger, along with Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, and Wild Bill Hickman. A local lawman all had real backgrounds. However these characters actions are fictional but the basis for their character is that of history as well.
Characters such as Winter Bird are created off a composite of Indigenous people in the area with her persona as a lesbian chief with many wives was inspired by the historical reference of people from her time and location. Also James Wolsey the character from the show had similarities to someone in history and the actor took those queues to inspire what we saw on the screen.
The show begins with an on screen showing of the mountain meadows massacre which really happened. Mormon Soldiers disguised as Indigenous people, kill a wagon group that are traveling west. The historical accuracy for the scene does pull information from real resources and witness reports. The Mountain Meadows Massacre acts as an important event which propels many plots throughout the timeline.
The production staff used several books, visits to the historical sites along with meetings with authors to gain understanding for the events they were showcasing. This is used to ground those fictional stories that would play an important role during the narrative process while creating each episode.
Fort Bridger which has its presence throughout the series also was created after researching the fur trading post from the mid-1800s. With accurate set designs production attempted to follow all historical facts from what the layout to also the structure to be authentic to viewers. The structure in real life was an important point for emigrants that were moving from point to point as the traveled during the west ward expansion of American society.
The story in which Jim Bridger sells Fort Bridger to Brigham Young was used for both the actual reality but also in a metaphorical sense of showing power dynamics in the area. Also there was destruction by way of fire in both real life and the show.
The core storyline that runs parallel to other issues involves Sara Rowell, a mother trying to create a better life with her son while on the run. The connection to Isaac Reed who agrees to be their guide shows another facet in the struggle for a safe and peaceful life. These unique interactions from a large part of the narrative as other supporting actors play an equally compelling story within that same timeline.
Isaac the main character that also provides guidance for other characters is seeking ways to make the most out of their new opportunities while facing his own internal battles and past tragedy. He struggles to show emotion which at times adds a lot of unique complexities to his own character while connecting with the others as they explore what a true bond would mean during tough times.
Abish and Winter Bird create a powerful female role in which they must choose a direction despite heavy influence. The roles they chose often defied what the standard expectation was for women at that point. Abish also challenges the traditional path for women of the time with a different worldview. This view also becomes her fatal flaw as she navigates her difficult relationships within her situation.
The theme of survival permeates “American Primeval” as individuals struggle to make morally right decisions when their existence has come down to life or death decisions. Each moment highlights power dynamics along with the cost that the decisions bring to each individual making their own way in a brutal world. The show explores those complex challenges to morality when faced with impossible circumstances.
The series overall explores both good and evil with what all of those choices can bring about, using a real life backdrop to illustrate what they thought that concept may have meant back during that time.
While the series is designed as a limited run. The creators have mentioned a chance for new episodes if various elements become a reality. If they go forward season two might focus on different directions with the characters that were seen at the very end. This decision is still under speculation.
A potential next chapter may showcase additional developments for surviving main characters with potential for what happens in their individual next phases. This will rely on location, production and also character commitment for this possible future to develop.
