Allison Hargreeves: The Power to Control
Allison Hargreeves, a member of The Umbrella Academy, has one of the most awesome and a little creepy, powers: she can manipulate other people's minds with a simple "I heard a rumor". Her abilities grow throughout the Netflix show's seasons, making her both a powerful ally and sometimes, a scary force of nature.
Initially, Allison needed to say the iconic "I heard a rumor," but, in later seasons, the show amped things up and Allison became way more powerful. She could mind-control anyone by simply telling them to do what she wanted without needing to say those classic words. And this is all thanks to an event in The Umbrella Academy Season 3 where Allison gets blasted by some energy, resulting in a change for her abilities. Talk about a superhero upgrade!
The Power of Rumor: How it Works
Let's get into the details. We've seen her make an opponent target their partner in a flash by using that classic phrase. Imagine if you had that power! But with these super skills, she's a major asset when fighting against their arch-enemies.
What makes Allison's powers tricky? Well, sometimes it's not quite clear whether she’s making those "rumors" true, or just making people believe things are a different way! Like in Season 1, some people thought she had something to do with her relationship with her friend Claire! If that doesn’t raise red flags about a superhero, nothing will!
The Upgrade! The Marigold and Allison's Enhanced Powers
The mind control in Season 3 isn’t the only crazy twist. Get this – in The Umbrella Academy Season 4, Allison has a new way to mind-control! Imagine saying nothing and just using your thoughts to take control! And guess what, she even uses it to get things done when she's rescuing Klaus at the end of season 4. But is this kind of like Telekinesis, or is she just bending reality?
Turns out there’s more to Allison's story. The Umbrella Academy comics give us a whole different version of how she uses her abilities She can do some serious stuff! In those stories, Allison could totally change reality just by wishing! Season 4 has been criticized for a lot of things, but it’s awesome how the show writers are taking hints from the Comics and changing her powers to feel more in line with her original source.
Allison and The Umbrella Academy
You could even say Allison's powers and the story surrounding them have a connection to The Umbrella Academy series' whole purpose: a dysfunctional, but kind-of-together family who use superhero abilities to fix everything, which is more or less what happened throughout the series!
All these superpowered Hargreeves Siblings - there are a lot of crazy abilities! There’s Klaus and his ability to commune with the dead; Vanya, with her incredible power of chaos; Luther’s whole monkey situation; and, yeah, we're back to Allison, whose superpower really is Mind Control.
The Future of Allison
Fans were shocked when the show's creators changed some details about The Umbrella Academy and the Comics - they’re trying to strike a balance between staying true to the story and being different, which is a huge challenge, especially since the source material is already so fantastic!
But, the best part about it? The changes were so exciting, showing us that even with an ending for The Umbrella Academy, the world will forever have those memorable and a bit crazy Hargreeves, who might make us chuckle one moment, make us tear up the next, and leave us wondering how everything got so complex.
