Agatha Harkness's Secret History: From Salem to "Jolene"!

Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) is a force of nature, and that awesome "Agatha All Along" episode from WandaVision revealed a seriously wild history!   That epic backstory extends all the way back to the Salem Witch Trials (1600s) and demonstrates that this character really knows a lot; demonstrating she's survived for centuries!   And this powerful, mysterious witch isn’t just hidden away from casual viewers and audiences: Agatha All Along, episode 6 (“Familiar By Thy Side”) even gives us a glimpse of just how famous she already is, within the confines of her particular reality; especially with her interactions with the Maximoff family; adding intrigue and mystery! We see Billy Maximoff's (in a new body) research on Agatha , and its resulting reveal. We explore how Agatha's immense power (absorbing life force from other witches, something demonstrated and done in Salem) became this important part of both supernatural lore and for people who’ve no direct awareness that the character even exists.   This epic reveal uses this very method which showcases a clear parallel in storytelling!

That’s a ton of history. The reveal, concerning Agatha’s immense impact across the 20th century (involvement in the Titanic’s sinking and the Hindenburg disaster), and the impact that she caused demonstrates that the entire MCU world has this intense interconnection and demonstrates how easily these seemingly obscure incidents can get explained through these methods and references! We also learn how famous she is with the supernatural community– her legend spreading, all through her epic, slightly terrifying accomplishments. She makes an intense reveal concerning Dolly Parton’s legendary “Jolene” song – apparently, Agatha was that Jolene! Although, it's never directly confirmed –  that's a pretty solid Easter Egg showing some very, very intense creativity from the entire creative team! We delve deeper in this clever use of historical storytelling references; further showing how a long-standing character could've easily been used.

Agatha Harkness and "Jolene": A Hilarious Parallel with Loki's Trickery!

The reveal concerning Agatha’s appearance (as that infamous Jolene) in the 1970s shows a powerful parallel;  another important reference that’s never directly spelled out; however those clever use of allusions hints toward this key fact, even if unseen by casual viewers. Those surveillance photos from 1972 show Dolly Parton slapping Agatha; a fun cameo hinting toward that very song; but its subtle nod connects Agatha Harkness’s story arc with that key Loki trick.    Remember Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) infamous confession (in Loki, Season 1's "Glorious Purpose") about being the unidentified D. B. Cooper?  That infamous plane hijacker.  The creative team behind Loki and later Marvel series uses real-life figures.   It really never gets old; these clever tricks are what create intense loyalty among viewers!

This approach became surprisingly common in other works. It shows similar attempts to reference other famous stories that include the same methods—using previously existing real-life mysteries to add intrigue:  There’s Casey (Eugene Cordero) from Loki Season 2, revealed as a variant of Frank Morris (that famous Alcatraz escapee). Those clever twists in this character design create incredibly intense parallels! It showcases how Agatha’s inclusion parallels Loki's approach.
