Movies News Talk
You've probably heard the rumors about 28 Years Later, the sequel to the beloved Zombie flick 28 Days Later. Now, a whole lot of new details are being whispered by movie fans. Cillian Murphy is back! A bunch of big-name actors like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer are joining the mix. And the most interesting piece of the puzzle? The sequel's director, Alex Garland, has said he's basically "ripping off" a super-old film from the 70s, called Kes.
It seems like everyone's pretty sure this upcoming Zombie movie is going to end in a massive bummer, a tragic tear-jerker, a real “ouch” kind of finale. This is based on that film Kes, which the director himself has said was an inspiration, and you know what they say, "inspired by" sometimes means "totally copied from"!
Alright, let's talk Kes, the movie Alex Garland's allegedly ripping off for 28 Years Later. It's a heart-warming, sometimes kinda sad story about a boy named Billy who makes friends with a kestrel bird. If you've got some free time, and some tissues, watch it because it's pretty darn touching, though if you're easily weepy you might need to have a break from all the sad stuff before the Ending.
So here’s the deal with Kes - and this is the kicker for those wanting a happy Ending - that little feathered friend, that little buddy of Billy's… yeah, it dies, real tragically, at the hands of Billy's older brother! Now, considering what the 28 Years Later director's said, he’s literally taking Kes and making his own zombie movie around the story’s sadness.
You might remember the first 28 Days Later had a more hopeful, if slightly more gruesome, ending than that of Kes, giving the hope that these characters might have survived! Cillian Murphy's character, Jim, gets shot and almost dies in one version of the Movie, but somehow ends up recovering and making it to safety!
And then there’s the real kicker. The first 28 Days Later also ends on a note that kinda says, “Well, they got to safety... or did they?”, leaving us a bit in suspense about what really happens to these zombie survivors. The thing is, we know now that Alex Garland isn't afraid to do a heartbreaking ending, if that's the way he’s imagining 28 Years Later, because he has made those kinds of decisions with Movies like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and even Dredd! Now that he’s proven he's a big name in the director’s game, this could really make the 28 Days Later series, which has some amazing action and zombie stuff, much, much more bleak.
After that kinda messed-up happy ending in the original movie, everyone was wondering if Garland would switch it up with 28 Years Later. There's just so much more depth now, given what we’re seeing about that whole “Kes inspiration” thing, and if 28 Years Later is just going to pull a Kes – with all the tragedy - then it really means that a lot of people’s hearts might be ripped apart. Remember what happened in the first movie! Cillian Murphy's character survived, or did he, and what happened to Selena and Hannah! Is that even a real rescue? So what exactly does this "Kes" ending mean for those characters! Will 28 Years Later truly show us how the survivors ended up? It’s almost certainly going to have a grim finish.
While that "sad ending" vibe seems like a bad idea for some, others will probably dig the new darkness, and it fits in perfectly with all those questions about the whole 28 Days Later series, like, where did everyone else go, and were they okay? We'll just have to wait to see!
The final decision, though, is going to be Alex Garland's, and no one is quite sure about when it's going to hit the screens. This is the third chapter of the zombie story we're talking about, and even though those who like the first two 28 Days Later films will likely keep on following the series, the possibility of such a devastating ending could put some fans off, and others on edge to watch the sad truth unfold!
We can't help but wonder: Are you team “Kes is just for inspiration" or "they are really ripping off that movie?". It’s really going to come down to watching 28 Years Later, and it'll probably break your heart one way or the other!
