The Penguin Episode 5 Review: A Brutal Masterpiece | HBO

The Penguin Episode 5: Gotham's Underbelly Gets Even Darker!

The Penguin Episode 5: A Brutal Masterpiece of Storytelling

The Penguin episode 5 ("Homecoming") might not quite match the shocking intensity of episode 4, but it still delivers that signature awesome HBO quality. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc continues to keep the pressure on; tightening the screws around Oz's (Colin Farrell) precarious position; that amazing episode really puts everything together; delivering that expected mid-season setup that involves many intriguing storylines, while simultaneously never slowing the pacing. After episode 4's intense backstory, this new chapter catapults right back to the present; setting up the story's arc that will greatly determine how Oz's ambitious plans truly shape this particular season! The story continues to impress at every turn. A great installment; and perfectly displays why this show already continues to be at the forefront.

It's very focused; creating several developments. Episode 5 unpacks the repercussions of Sofia Falcone's betrayal (from the last episode's ending), adding an amazing new layer which develops Oz's scheme that surrounds his plans that engulf the city itself, demonstrating how this brilliant adaptation is truly one-of-a-kind.  The intensity does get raised. Every twist gets perfectly executed; showing a darker Oz than we initially saw before and showing another key plot moment from the storyline involving the intense power play against the Maroni family— this showcases Oz's ruthless rise and how his ambitions grow into something even more powerful. The violence in this episode deserves specific comment and is what made this so memorable for those involved and fans everywhere!

While episode 4 had quite a body count and flashes of insane ultra-violence scattered elsewhere–“Homecoming” goes full throttle. The story starts from the emotional tenderness that Oz shows; yet then, that moment makes the subsequent revelation concerning Oz's plan to deal with the Maroni family; even more shocking! The shift in Oz's behavior— that stark contrast–demonstrates how far the characters within this story are willing to go! It’s a completely unhinged display.

The show's moral ambiguity shines here, highlighting the sheer brutality in Gotham's underbelly. There are zero heroes, especially given the continuing absence of Batman. It showcases several things regarding character ambitions and plans; and Sofia and Oz's actions show that perfectly: Violence makes their statements! This sets things up even further for Clancy Brown's Sal Maroni's arrival– his menacing presence creates those chilling undertones of suspense and intensity.

Colin Farrells Oz Cobb holds a lighter in The Penguin Image

After spending over a decade in Arkham AsylumCristin Milioti's Sofia finally makes her big arrival.   Episode 4 sets up her reemergence, and “Homecoming” reinforces her position, spotlighting the new crime family, and establishing this huge, impending threat which hangs over Oz. That’s an obvious source of major problems for Oz, a source of huge tension in this new power dynamic. That contrast between the performances is fantastic;  Milioti’s reserved menace, emphasizing coolness against Farrell’s animated portrayal really generates incredible cinematic conflict; it deserves some major awards; something that’s only done well by this episode.

Exceptional Performances Across the Board!

Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb? Fantastic, folks! The storyline positions Farrell's performance perfectly: he's charming and menacing when winning, terrifying when falling apart, completely changing and highlighting many facets of Oz’s complex persona which showcases all those amazing emotions underlying and driving many of Oz’s plans, actions, and motivations;  this greatly adds depth. The scene of Oz observing his grim factory work made a brilliant, truly terrifying experience!

But another person who receives similar levels of critical success: Deirdre O'Connell’s Francis! That subtle portrayal; highlighting all those complexities from the early deterioration of that maternal bond creates deeply emotional and relatable moments!  Her dual role (the gentle dementia; that hard turn to lucidity); completely impacts Oz's character; showing his problematic aspects make complete sense under that influence. A superb supporting role!

Final Thoughts on The Penguin Episode 5: An Excellent Middle Ground

Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone-1 Image

Episode 5 brings together those present, immediate dramatic moments – giving each one a sufficient space for an extremely emotional impact upon the viewers – and simultaneously sets the foundation for future installments of that season excellently. It was expertly shot. That pacing keeps you on the edge of your seat! While there’s a lacking aspect related to The Batman movie and characters like Jim Gordon’s lack of involvement during these events – a key omission in the story and an inconsistency from The Batman's continuity; it's not something entirely disruptive for this series.

But what everyone really enjoyed: that final scene's music!  Using The Cure? Brilliant and completely unexpected choice!

Conclusion: Another Stunning Chapter in Gotham's Criminal Underworld
