Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che delivered their final segment for the year which included jokes on Luigi Mangione's extradition plus Matt Gaetz House Ethics Committee report in addition to felon George Santos’ new podcast which is a yearly tradition. The show continued the popular yearly tradition that includes a joke swap with many jokes of a personal nature particularly toward Colin Jost and his actress wife Scarlett Johansson .
Colin Jost and Michael Che joked about Luigi Mangione who is facing accusations of shooting CEO of United Healthcare then comically connecting it to dating app Bumble. The co-anchors also focused jokes on Mangione being held in the same prison as rapper Diddy which had some double entendre of Diddy's previous activities online . Michael Che also targeted Matt Gaetz who faced sex trafficking allegations in the upcoming ethics report with some quips including jokes about Gaetz’s girlfriend. Colin Jost added additional jokes at the expense of former representative George Santos referencing his new podcast with claims that viewers can access it by entering their social security numbers. The recurring joke exchange between Colin and Michael became quite personal that the crowd and viewers found hilarious
Colin Jost may face consequences at home after he told several jokes about his wife Scarlett Johansson during SNL's Weekend Update . The actress and past Five Timers Club member Scarlett Johansson had a cameo in the opening monologue plus watched backstage as Jost nervously delivered jokes that Che wrote specifically for the segment. During the bit Jost mentions Scarlett just turned 40 and then acted like he was going to leave her at home to the shock of Johansson . Then he stated the reason was “Because We Just had a black child Together" with both audience and Scarlett in shock at his joke delivery. The yearly joke segment once again caused uncomfortable moments with the spotlight shining onto the couple.
Colin Jost also read a joke about Scarlett and mentioned that he eats roast beef after his wife’s recent childbirth and further elaborated that he only did this to "Enjoy his wife's recent baby" at home that visibly shocked Johansson with “Oh my God” on camera capturing the shocked moment. The show once again demonstrates some inside humour targeting Colin’s real life using Scarlett to highlight discomfort. The segment that caused great shock reactions is a common staple for this yearly segment among audience members and all show regulars . Scarlett appeared visibly disturbed about her husband’s roast on his personal life that the show broadcasted.
This is not the first time that Jost has jokingly used his marriage with Scarlett Johansson for humor purposes at SNL. Earlier in the show's 49th season in May during an earlier version of Weekend Update Jost commented that the new Scarlett Johansson AI sounded too good that the main difference was not having a body and mentioning not having seen her film her also a jab against Johansson’s film. His comment made during the show came from high-profile conflict with OpenAI where she threatened to sue demonstrating how deeply she feels her art . The SNL writers used real-life drama from Jost's life with Scarlett as humor material.
Fox News contributor Joe Concha has also joined many critics by offering his opinion during 'Fox and Friends First' where he criticized SNL for mocking Brian Thompson the recently murdered CEO at UnitedHealthcare and for joking at an event between president-elect Donald Trump and Jill Biden during Paris event over the weekend. 'Fox and Friends First' show also highlighted some viewer opinions stating the show seemed to target different events without sensitivity further indicating a political bend. The controversy stirred by some shows how SNL is perceived through the lens of different viewer interpretations. SNL still remains very well viewed despite critique.
Colin Jost who always trades barbs with his fellow co anchor was not spared when Michael Che had Jost deliver some racially charged jokes in a “Black Voice” and as mentioned before his reactions created memorable visual sequences. Jost began his monologue with an apology recognizing some racially charged material was about to occur which set the scene for uncomfortable jokes to begin . He followed by reciting a controversial joke about Vice President Kamala Harris followed with a joke that made reference to slavery reparations highlighting discomfort and uneasiness when reciting such charged materials. After the racially charged jokes he was again forced to discuss jokes about Scarlett who looked visibly cringed before he began with more jokes.
The camera showed Johansson in shock before Jost jokingly mentioned that he may leave Johansson as she turned forty that garnered laughs and groans from both audience and Scarlett who looked quite disturbed. Jost added more jokes mentioning “Our child being black” further adding to the chaotic laughter of audience members with the live show audience fully immersed in this comedic chaos. Scarlett appeared cringed and took a drink after his joke highlighting awkward discomfort for this special segment.
In an example of rehashed joke formats in last years version of SNL jost was made to poke fun at his wife’s acting capabilities. A prior year's episode also saw Colin make a joke about drinking to enjoy his wife Scarlett's movie The Black Widow by joking ‘she would be a better version of Black Widow than Coretta Scott King’ another remark that many view as very out of bounds even though his intention is only to make viewers laugh. The recurring use of Johansson at the center of comedy is a strategy the SNL crew uses for their advantage drawing audience numbers and viewer satisfaction in their format of uncomfortable situations that can often cause discomfort to the people who are being discussed.
Scarlett Johansson admitted on 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' the yearly jokes at her expense on Saturday Night Live are incredibly “brutal" as they tend to create tension. She even said she “blacks out” through these moments of jokes and doesn't remember specific content from previous years showing true distaste for her role within those performances. The married couple have maintained a public relationship since 2017 when they connected at SNL’s venue while she was a host and he was still in a writing role with the couple finally marrying back in 2020 demonstrating their strong ongoing relationship despite SNL joke cycles.
