Keri Russell: From Felicity to The Diplomat – A Chat About Politics, Wigs, and Everything In Between!
Keri Russell is back as Kate Wyler in The Diplomat Season 2 (premiering October 31st on Netflix). And things are changing, even outside that diplomatic setting in the United Kingdom! While those first two seasons filmed entirely in London, Season 3 shifts to Brooklyn— right near Russell’s home! Russell comments that being close to her family— and to Deborah Cahn (the show’s writer) during this incredibly challenging year made a huge difference! Russell was also recently involved in many political controversies; further showing how hard a working actress could really have to juggle work with the issues around social events that have major impact.
It sounds utterly bonkers to many viewers who may only know her earlier works: Filming these sets that were specifically located far away now end up closer. Russell found some profound joy being able to work so near her home, instead of working miles away in another country, not able to easily support her family through simple physical proximity that many may otherwise overlook but in this incredibly intense timeframe makes all the difference and was very clearly essential.
Season 2 has this totally crazy plot overlap with current events (no spoilers here, folks!). Russell notes that she is totally amused; even slightly terrified of the sheer accuracy achieved here, even emphasizing the reality for making a series such as The Diplomat; involving plots involving incredibly high stakes that needed accurate writing.
Filming was way before those recent strikes (writers and actors), a seriously impressive feat which suggests there is significant foresight employed! The entire plot, its trajectory and some major shifts were already carefully planned well before any of those controversies impacted various sectors within the entertainment industry; showcasing impressive foresight.
Russell loves working on The Diplomat, calling it "one of those rare great jobs". The series blends intelligent plots with genuinely hilarious moments, creating that sweet spot and those great levels of tension; something almost never seen in other political dramas which only resort to being dark or incredibly serious. The character, especially as portrayed here also allows for lots of opportunities that are never otherwise presented – opportunities for comedic character acting; something rarely seen from Russell but clearly is an opportunity that has been very well capitalized upon here!
And it's especially exciting in light of that crazily complex political environment. As Kate, Russell perfectly embodies this: She's a complicated, flawed and messy female character! The entire character's complexity; something explored within its storyline and through Russell’s acting; includes moments where this character has to deal with serious scrutiny regarding her outfits and appearance–which directly impacts and references issues currently happening within modern day politics; showcasing once more that level of attention needed during production and especially now within this political drama, as these kind of intense situations affect politics enormously.
Russell calls the series this incredible, diverse mix of drama types; a blend of political drama, thrills, social commentary, and also, a kind of romantic comedy (considering the main pair in the plot!). This eclectic mix really helped create some key unique situations in Kate and Hal’s relationship, with plenty of crazy, funny, awkward, intimate—all sorts of intense emotional situations that make this specific relationship incredibly diverse. Russell remarks that the combination of these larger events within that intense political landscape and the smaller moments— that perfectly portrayed awkwardness regarding her own outfits or other minor difficulties that made everything funnier!
Russell points out this specific method in handling very serious and intense roles; and emphasizes this kind of detachment that she must adopt in some very high-stakes scenes and episodes in these projects. It is very impressive to hear how she does these, noting the importance for balance: adopting serious methods in character analysis while also adopting lightness when not on set – it’s necessary in maintaining a strong personal emotional and mental equilibrium when these projects can impact mental state. In this regard she finds it extremely easy!
And she has worked through these challenges perfectly and demonstrates how those kinds of experiences created a positive impact upon her: It's not helped when this intense workload happens when other matters are important to balance like raising kids and working simultaneously. The immense time spent during this show— even for an experienced actress as she is ––made these aspects utterly invaluable; emphasizing just how important balancing all these elements and taking the necessary breaks really is in preventing burn-out and burnout related health issues which is highly valued, and extremely significant.
This interview ends with discussing the post-show lives for those Americans characters Elizabeth and Philip! And Russell mentions how even outside their creative relationship— as she is a huge fan; those amazing responses generated from Tori’s work; demonstrates once more just how important fan reactions truly are and especially within the complex and highly interconnected network of The Americans and that deep engagement for many people within this community! Those ideas were never explored outside this very specific storyline, but this aspect really highlights those kinds of community development.
And what might those characters be up to? That's very interesting, as many have different theories. And that could spark another conversation, another point emphasized which relates very closely to how audiences participate.
Keri Russell’s journey highlights her capacity for adopting extremely diverse characters! Her success also shows just how powerful a role that taking those needed breaks truly are; how taking time helps improve well-being; even after very high intensity projects! The immense work, especially in those moments relating to very intense production and scheduling highlights the complex behind the scenes considerations; those considerations were extremely well planned! From that legendary Felicity to the critically acclaimed Americans to her amazing turn in The Diplomat, it shows an exciting arc filled with very nuanced character interpretations.
