Abbott Elementary Review: Way More Than Just a Sitcom (and Why You Should Be Watching)
Okay, so you’re thinking about watching Abbott Elementary, but you’re not sure if it lives up to the hype? I get it. Everyone's talking about it, and sometimes the internet makes even decent shows sound overrated. Let me, a self-proclaimed TV aficionado and lover of shows both excellent and absolutely trash, give you the real lowdown. Consider this your no-BS abbott elementary review. And yes, spoiler alert – it’s actually very good.
Let me put it plainly; if you think the discussion around asking "Is Abbott Elementary good?" has any merit after spending an episode (even only just a clip!) with each character then perhaps sitcom humour is simply not for you.
Most reviews rehash the same points, making me think a press kit got over-shared instead of each one actually providing their perspective! Most only briefly summarize plots. If a particular scene gets highlighted they might get away from simply listing these plot highlights – if they spend too long describing they fail; if not enough is given the review fails anyway.
This is precisely what I am going to try to not repeat!
So, Is Abbott Elementary Worth Watching? (Absolutely!)
Here’s where my personal opinions make things a little ridiculous. I tend to prefer humour where ridiculousness escalates from the outset to complete absurd nonsensical mayhem as a method to express or point at the real point of view. Slapstick has its place, but I just tend to find shows lacking. Even among highly-ranked hits, some feel incredibly shallow.
Abbott is one that hits perfectly. Despite containing moments with ridiculous and almost surreal character dialogues that escalate and make every moment funnier in the most random or even seemingly unearned manner. The story becomes compelling! We relate! Because everyone has some character moments and quirks shown so absurdly it makes even its characters even funnier; every episode grows, like mould growing on that random apple you may or may not have even been remembering you actually left on a drawer three years ago! Because honestly, what kind of person actually reviews such stuff! I watch this specifically to laugh at this absurdly-created moments – not actually plot resolution; what is happening barely makes the narrative even compelling! But at the same time its the most entertaining watch. Because who even needs a character-focused series anymore?! What is this supposed to be even compared with!
Beyond the Laughs: Why This Show Hits Different
Here’s something most reviews about Abbott overlook. It’s funny without turning the character into completely one-dimensional caricature-like parodies. We laugh at and relate with characters despite the obvious hyper-reality presented: Teachers overworked. Staff underpaid. Ridiculous levels of paperwork or even the character interactions presented!
Yet we still see ourselves reflected somewhere in that environment and through that representation. Which is why it all rings even truer.
- The Ensemble Cast: Every character has unique strengths and weaknesses, creating realistic scenarios. How can they feel “over-the-top” – even their traits appear almost one dimensional?! Why even care, if it isn’t relatable? Yet everything becomes real! Its so strange how the ridiculousness creates this realism!
- Smart, Sincere Writing: There is clearly depth of writing because they make each ridiculous dialogue exchange feel grounded and add weight despite all lacking that apparent meaning or even being compelling from any form! No exposition or unearned dialogue! How else can we appreciate each small character change, even?! The random interactions become the sole narrative!
- A Touch of Optimism: Let’s face it. Sometimes real situations hit us pretty hard and become far harder if taken literally than the parody shown! How is it funny then, even?! Somehow a glimmer of optimism permeates all throughout each scene!
Let me explain something: What I found incredibly powerful personally; even with all ridiculousness shown escalating from that starting point in the pilot to become completely unbelievable! – each season managed to end in such perfect character conclusions. Somehow making each narrative beat land and satisfying!
The Abbott Elementary Verdict: Should You Watch?
Yes. Without hesitation. No question mark, even!
If you’re looking for the smart humour, character work quality found among great ensemble comedy productions and a truly positive show Abbott delivers. Is Abbott Elementary good, indeed?! Of course! How would anyone watching the intro itself ever ask again even?! Even if nothing has “meaning”; simply enjoy. Watch! Laugh!
