During New York Comic-ConGuillen gave an exclusive interview. The comments showed those details impacting Guillermo's final arc. The following sections present exactly just what Guillen had to say; those thoughts presented explain how deeply Guillen understood how this development works and emphasizes why his role has become so crucial.

“I think it's hard for people to break habits and change, and to make boundaries. And I think in personal relationships and work relationships, it's always hard to have those conversations with yourself and say, 'This isn't healthy for me. This isn't bettering my life. This isn't going anywhere.' So, those kinds of conversations just in the mirror are hard, sometimes, because we get comfortable, and sometimes we get comfort in knowing the Familiar, even though it's miserable. But we, at least, know what it is, as opposed to the unknown.”

These thoughts from Guillen showcase his ability to craft compelling backstories, recognizing how complicated those kinds of transitions from deeply ingrained habits and behaviors often happen to regular people and is not simply exclusive to his characters. He makes it personal; those small moments shared through introspection provide another layer showing the actor’s insight regarding his character's complexity; understanding those aspects surrounding changing oneself, especially through the recognition of Toxic relationships.

Facing the Unknown: Guillermo's Courage and Compassion

Guillen continued; using the butterfly metaphor: “So, it's better to know the misery you're in than the misery that lies ahead, that we don't know. I just feel Guillermo is finally comfortable enough, because he's been breaking out of his cocoon slowly, and now he's this butterfly that he's proud of who he is. He's comfortable in his sexuality, he knows he's not what he's been told by society. Even his housemates, who belittle him and treat him like a servant and whatnot. To so many degrees, as an audience member, I would be so upset, because he saved them so many times.”

This emphasizes Guillermo’s growth and the significant steps taken; becoming his true self through accepting his Sexuality which adds even greater importance considering his choices regarding self-acceptance, especially while facing opposition and discrimination; this is another critical moment showing how greatly he cares about self-acceptance and how significant such choices were; not for him only, but for everyone around him.

And he still cares!  “Despite this, however, Guillermo still holds plenty of compassion for the four Vampires, even if his path forward will take him into the unknown, as he takes the many lessons he learned throughout his time as a Familiar to give him the strength to take risks. But the thing is that Guillermo is leading with love and empathy, so he could never turn his back on his castmates, or his teammates in the household, because he loves them. Even though they might have cold blood pumping through their hearts, because they're dead and out of this world, they're still his family, and they're his chosen family, and he will protect them at any cost.”

Guillen's words highlight this beautiful truth: the power of chosen family. This also shows his unwavering loyalty!  He made this incredibly meaningful connection to his character which helps explain that compassion he held even while recognizing those moments that needed change and a complete break; from abusive friendships toward greater autonomy! This deep affection ultimately underscores his personality, demonstrating the actor’s insight and skill for truly creating these humanly-relatable moments.

Season 6: The Final Chapter – Guillermo's Risky New Path

Season 5 set the stage for that final arc – giving Guillermo the life he always craved and discovering it was really not for him; then seeing his undead housemates’ efforts made towards helping him is critically important in emphasizing that even deeply-set expectations which were self-generated and based around pre-existing narrative conventions need not be followed by any specific characters. Even after being deceived previously –  his Vampire roommates helped deal with his potential transformation into vampirism. That is a lot!

Guillen continued, saying, “And that's another reason why he even came out to protect his chosen family and his biological family. Both of them were at war, and he chose his sexuality as a shield to protect both of them and stop the chaos. So, it's stuff like that that looking back, he's in a journey where he picks up in Season 6, it's like, 'Yeah, good for him. Take a risk, take a huge risk, and take swings, because you never know what's gonna pay off.'”

These comments from Guillen bring up the fact that, even after everything that he had undergone, these past decisions surrounding his sexuality was a moment in which his character's growth became undeniable. He takes risks; but uses these for his greater empowerment! This perfectly ties to Season 6's new development–that awakening of a previously unseen housemate–and shows just how complex the issues really were.  These are incredibly nuanced plot choices which add that necessary conflict but does not threaten to derail the previously well-established storyline which helps make for such a solid finale!
