The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 - Maggie & Hershel's Rocky Road

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2: Maggie and Hershel's Rocky Road Ahead!

Lauren Cohen Teases Maggie and Hershel's Tumultuous Relationship in Dead City Season 2!

Get ready, Walking Dead fans! Lauren Cohen (Maggie) dished some serious tea about the mother-son dynamic in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 at New York Comic Con! This isn’t just any mother-son relationship; those earlier seasons really set a foundation highlighting those already difficult connections that need resolution; and considering the show's existing setting; its themes and the very premise; this storyline could actually add even greater impact and dramatic moments that are likely to become seriously intense!

Dead City season 2 picks up with Maggie back in New York City, focused on rescuing Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) after trading him off to the Burazi in the hopes of saving her own son.  Recall Hershel’s (Logan Kim) anger towards Maggie, believing her lingering anger at Negan was clouding her judgment, that this made Maggie's decisions rash and that this needed mending to allow Hershel to trust his mom more. Season 2's promise adds tension because we don’t know what happened before the season premiere. How will Maggie respond? How would Hershel react?

A Shifting Dynamic: Maggie's Struggles Impact Hershel

Cohen hinted that Maggie’s parental role in season 2 changes!  She noted that those turbulent adolescent years really are necessary – we all grow up to rebel against our parents – it’s biological! The insight suggests Maggie's own struggles will rub off on Hershel – and could get messy for Hershel! Here is what Cohen specifically said:

"I don't know if we will see it begin to heal or if we will see it be pressure cooked and challenged. I think that the greatest joy, I'll say joy, because I like that this is relatable, is exploring this dynamic in great detail because teenagers have...there's something I heard the other day I thought was so interesting between the age of seven and 16.... Somewhere, when we're all adolescents and terribly rebellious, and where nothing our parents say can possibly make any sense. It's so biologically necessary, so that we leave our tribe and go and make babies in a different tribe. A good thing that a parent can say at this point is to know and to appreciate that everything they can say or do is going to be wrong, but to surround their children with good voices that might still help them in the right direction. And one of the great challenges this year is that there aren't particularly good influences for Maggie to lean on, so it's continuing to be there for your child and learning what it is to be a parent. I mean, it makes me so sad."

That's intense, highlighting what those complex parent-child issues might involve within this context; those very realistic, heartbreaking aspects that are going to occur for Maggie!

Hershel's Journey: New Influences and Potential Danger

Trailers suggest Hershel might join Maggie in NYC to help rescue Negan. This indicates his intention to become more involved, act as mediator to resolve those complicated past feelings.   And it is entirely likely that Hershel already knows those key plans by The Dama (Lisa Emery). He saw that finger removal while imprisoned! Yet Cohen’s comments make this tricky. He will face difficulties and other impacts that may negatively impact his life – interactions with other characters like The Croat (Željko Ivanek) and Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles).

It’s really unclear what influence Hershel might encounter and this remains uncertain until future events unfold throughout this upcoming season and creates major intrigue that continues throughout that new story arc. It could create some interesting, intense moments.
