The Rings of Power: Gandalf Reveal - Did the Show Break Canon?

The ending of the most recent Rings of Power season, dropped a huge bomb and a big reveal: The Stranger? Yep, it's Gandalf! So was it a good choice for those die-hard Lord of the Rings fans? It looks like everyone was a bit perplexed by the huge change.

Well, an expert in all things J.R.R. Tolkien explained how the show didn't go against the beloved "canon."

Gandalf? The Stranger? Explained!

Those watching were probably thinking, well that's not the way the Lord of the Rings books go, right?

It turns out that it is still in line with the stories that J.R.R. Tolkien created.

What seemed like an extraordinarily confusing addition wasn't actually a contradiction to Tolkien. This information was shared with audiences by a special video from Prime Video on their Twitter, which featured Dr. Corey Olsen!

Dr. Olsen, who really knows his stuff as a Tolkien Expert! It seems like everyone gets excited when a person with so much knowledge is about to chime in!

Breaking Down The Plot:

At the end of Season 2, the whole story takes a big turn.

  • The Stranger finally meets Tom Bombadil
  • What we discover, was that The Stranger had saved his friends. It is really interesting!
  • A "Dark Wizard." shows up and he had a lot of powerful skills. The show goes even deeper as a huge moment when The Stranger and Bombadil start talking. It's revealed how "The Stranger" gets the name "Gandalf. It was something a little off the mark for those that are familiar with Tolkien, however, this wasn't totally crazy!

Did The Show Break Canon?

So many fans wanted answers! There was so much that they learned about The Stranger.

One thing Tolkien made super clear, was when he said the Wizards arrived at the year 1000 of the Third Age!

What could happen was something unexpected and was all up for grabs for the fans!

  • Dr. Olsen really made it clear that it wasn't the case!
  • The Second Age has been talked about by Tolkien! This made sense as there could have been situations when these wizards really might have existed!
  • Dr. Olsen points out that Gandalf (that is the character in "Lord Of The Rings.") is known by different names in Middle-earth.
  • So these characters were very powerful, capable of impacting several communities.

So many of these fans might say "I am glad they're still bringing this awesome world of Tolkien to life! It really did show how The Rings of Power got started!

  • The Stranger is the character that caused so many questions and viewers loved seeing him as he faced the "Dark Wizard" to protect his friends!
  • The Stranger found that his calling was to save the Middle-earth world!
  • In these big events, they shortened how much time The Stranger had, however, this wasn't a problem as these wizards, had many roles they had to play in this massive world.

Fans got to see a version that is unique and may have left a lot of fans with questions.

While this new Prime Video series hasn't been renewed for Season 3, they are definitely planning out these story lines with their plans for Season 5 in the works!

We may have learned some powerful, intriguing and even exciting details as fans had a chance to hear how "The Stranger and "Gandalf" are intertwined in a very unique way. You get a fresh take on a very beloved character! For sure it could make audiences ponder this movie and be curious about what happens next in these massive adaptations!
