The Office (Australia) Review: Critics vs. Audience - Can It Be Saved?

The Office Australia Remake: A Hilarious Disaster or a Hidden Gem?

The Office Australia: Critics Love It, Audiences…Not So Much!

Whoa, Nelly! The Australian remake of The Office just dropped on Prime Video (October 18th), and the internet is buzzing. Except, not in a good way. Rotten Tomatoes shows a HUGE gap between critics and audiences; a real head-scratcher! Based on the iconic British show (created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant), it's the second international remake after that insanely popular US version with Steve Carell as Michael Scott. This remake stars a whole bunch of awesome Australian actors like Felicity WardShari Sebbens, and Steen Raskopoulos.

But the reactions? A wild mix. Critics gave it around 80% (based on five reviews!), audiences only 32% (over 50 reviews!). What gives? And does this necessarily imply that the whole project is bad?

Why the Harsh Audience Reaction? And Can It Be Saved?

This low rating is definitely bad news for the show's future.  But remember what happened with that original US remake of The Office?  It stumbled during its first season, the criticisms really hammered home that point, leading many fans and even critics at the time to initially have very different views from the current generation’s perception of it! But then what happened? That show grew! It ultimately flourished and transformed into this absolute cult favorite. Could this Australian version also have that incredible trajectory?

This remake got initial flack.  The trailer's reveal of a gender-swapped lead character—making it Hannah Howard (played by Felicity Ward), instead of a male counterpart  – this change alone angered many initial viewers, even impacting its initial ratings; those reactions impacted even some potential fans; however that initial response is a complex issue surrounding fanbase’s responses regarding expectations versus changes presented. Streaming makes a premature death quite possible! So Amazon must carefully decide whether it gives the series time to develop (or simply cancel this whole mess), a crucial decision which completely defines what comes next in this remake.

Can This Remake Ever Truly Shine?

Right now, the Aussie Office has struggled to resonate with viewers. And let's be real: this probably won't feature any moments ever on par with those truly legendary scenes from the OG show or even the earlier successful American remake! Even if the chances are low for ever becoming that famous— it could still make its own impact; a potentially worthwhile comedy show building on the groundwork from those classic versions! For that however to happen? This whole production would need some drastic changes to create that distinct flavor. A few key creative changes in upcoming seasons might help make it something amazing; enough to escape an early cancellation. And while some specific fan expectation’s satisfaction is likely impossible, it is still highly possible for this new production to gain audience respect and build a new cult fanbase entirely; although, given current responses; it is not a guarantee of its survival!

The Office (2024) - Poster Image

The Australian Office is a case study of an initially troubled production! Yet even those failures might just serve as the necessary precursor to a possibly triumphant comeback.  This highlights the unpredictability that might appear to occur and shows the complexities inherent within filmmaking! But, it doesn't make an impossible goal: a unique show worth its own attention – this remains very possible. And the chances that it could become wildly popular, a success on its own merit, not solely dependent on those prior, more successful releases of The Office; these too remain quite possible if Amazon plays its cards carefully and maintains faith; as a solid Season 2 could shift these low expectations, especially when carefully considered.
