We asked McGiver what drew him to Teacup. He revealed he was hooked after just ten pages! "I read 10 pages and stopped, turning to my wife and said, 'Read these 10 pages.' She said, 'Oh my God,' and it was like, 'There was no question.'" He said, this is more about intricate human relationships and it totally isn't that typical sci-fi Horror fare that might exist in other media.

Regarding his character, Donald, McGiver described his unique and subtle appeal; it was his multiple layered and complex approach, and this inherent nuance; "you really couldn't judge him by a cover. He was a book that had a lot more layers than you thought.” The amount of depth even in short dialogues amazed him and especially emphasized the emotional undertones throughout these specific encounters.

McGiver described those moments after he actually sees those amazing, intense and gruesome practical effects. He was incredibly impressed. "They're as much of a character as Donald, or Yvonne, or James, all of them. They're a massive character of this." Regarding Donald's reaction to Claire's death: "It’s surprising. We haven't properly read this book just by seeing the cover," McGiver said. There are some nuances which surprise, showing Donald's hidden empathy and moral center.
