Beloved for his performance of Scotty in the rebooted Star Trek films, Simon Pegg has joined his fellow cast members in stating a wish to go back for Star Trek 4. Pegg notes, though, that the sad death of Anton Yelchin—who played the venerable Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies—will always be a mark on a reunion of the USS Enterprise team. Just one month before Star Trek Beyond opened theatres, Yelchin, at the young age of 27, sadly died in a car accident in June 2016. Co-writing Star Trek Beyond with Doug Jung, Pegg expressed his great grief at Yelchin's death and said that it "forever tainted" any upcoming Star Trek projects.
Pegg discussed his wish to carry on the Star Trek adventure in an interview on The Sackhoff Show, but he also noted the shadow Yelchin's absence cast. Acknowledging that the loss of Yelchin would make the experience emotionally charged, he expressed his love for his co-stars and a wish to see them again. Pegg's comments underline the lasting link among the Star Trek crew as well as the great effect of Yelchin's sad death.
Star Trek Beyond gently prepared the audience for a follow-up by teasing Captain Kirk's adventures' next chapter. But the death of Yelchin and the lack of any specific Star Trek 4 development point the future of the series in doubt. Understanding the public opinion about Yelchin's performance, producer J.j. Abrams said Chekov's character would not be replaced, so opening room for original ideas.
Including the character of Jaylah, introduced in Star Trek Beyond and performed by Sofia Boutella, might be one possible fix. Compelling alien character Jaylah is a skilled survivor who will shortly be joining Starfleet at the end of Star Trek Beyond. Years later, her arrival on the Starship Enterprise naturally fills the void left by Chekov's absence by providing a fresh viewpoint and an homage to the soul of the original character.
Audiences have responded well to J.J. Abrams's Star Trek ensemble, which includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and Sofia Boutella because it captures the legendary legacy characters while adding their own personalities and dynamics to the Uss Enterprise crew. Their performances have shown the continuing relevance of Star Trek and generated fresh enthusiasm in the series.
Although the future of Star Trek 4 is still unknown, the collective wish of the cast to meet and carry on the legacy is evidence of their commitment and the ongoing attractiveness of the Star Trek universe. Though the absence of Anton Yelchin throws a long shadow, the future of Star Trek 4 could investigate new possibilities, honoring the legacy of the departed while embracing the potential of fresh characters and storylines.
