The concept of "school" encompasses a broad range of learning environments and experiences from the everyday routines to systemic problems. School has been used by all people at some time to further themselves and has evolved greatly.
Traditional schools offer education for children through a structured schedule, classrooms, curriculums and designated teachers. However, even within this seemingly familiar structure many aspects and viewpoints create many varied opinions on all parts of it.
From the pick up to drop off programs each daily experience at a typical public school has many levels of logistical planning. Every small detail may be in a set plan yet these events also have their own unforeseen challenges and unforeseen problems within a busy schedule that can add additional challenges to those running the programs. One such case was found in Richton Park Illinois a story that is one example of that type of struggle and a call for change with more consistent systems.
Stories such as a preschooler being left on a school bus at the end of the route for hours has made more people notice some of the real world challenges these places are experiencing. The story goes that the child had fallen asleep before arriving at school and as a result she was overlooked by the driver and other staff until a search began to find her as they had realized she was not in class.
The news surrounding the Illinois incident shows the importance of protocols with the staff responsible for the safe travel of children to and from home as they did not follow the process at that time. While children can sleep there should be processes for safety such as checking the bus for additional people to prevent such events. The issue brought up questions of security, processes that are followed daily and the trust placed in school systems.
As some traditional settings for school and public transportation are being challenged other approaches are becoming considered and more sought after to meet the changing need in many communities.
Durham Public Schools are developing a new measure with “family responsibility zones” where families are to ensure their children’s transport for those who are close to the school by walking to make the bus routes more sustainable and not overwhelmed. They would require students that are within 1.5 miles to walk themselves or provide another form of transportation.
Another method being explored is “Express Bus Stops” to which they would stop in key designated spots. The transportation team for Durham wanted input as to how that type of approach would effect the public and how they might create an easier solution that the student may access within their given needs.
One thing is made clear is that those involved in daily workings for a school are not perfect and that human error happens. How leadership handles these difficult areas will define their impact on a school and the message that they create moving forward in all interactions. The lack of staff in different areas is also adding extra layers of problems that they will have to navigate.
The struggle with Durham public school was to implement a solid plan while acknowledging issues like lack of proper resources and pay which has prevented new bus drivers from joining in that location. However, those schools continue with their hiring and training. Many other states can relate to the challenges of pay that are not enticing to others for various careers.
Durham’s new proposals also generated both negative feedback from families. There was frustration as their systems failed to acknowledge hardships that are present within the daily realities. It was also brought into the focus about issues such as safety which all seemed to be disregarded by leadership as new methods were considered. Many are saying that putting responsibilities solely on them was another layer of burdens to families.
While all forms of approaches are taken they also create a conversation with what the core issues of school planning should be. The most prominent areas to focus on are accessability safety and creating an environment where everyone can learn at their maximum level. This conversation shows a growing focus on changing with different systems that may be more current to issues seen today.
With transportation still at the forefront of conversation. School districts are taking all types of approaches that have never been looked at before. The approach of getting more data about all views, finding new answers and being able to find a way to ensure children are safe has now all come to light for most parents across the globe. All of those involved look to maintain standards with student safety.
