Grey's Anatomy: Sarah Drew on Her Shocking Firing – "Mean and Unjust!"

Sarah Drew's Grey's Anatomy Exit: A Candid Look Back

Sarah Drew, the beloved actress who played Dr. April Kepner on Grey's Anatomy for nine seasons, recently opened up about her departure from the show. In a candid conversation on the Call It What It Is podcast (hosted by former cast members Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington), Drew described her firing as "mean and unjust," explaining her earlier statement comparing the situation to "attending my own funeral."  It is very important for viewers to understand this was a significant issue for Drew, highlighting that despite having a lengthy and successful role that spanned several years and involved developing strong emotional attachments to other cast members and that this specific situation had been a truly traumatizing event; leaving Drew emotionally hurt at being let go so suddenly.

Drew, whose career had significant accomplishments; beginning in shows such as Everwood and working on other shows produced by Rhimes (Private Practice, and the unaired pilot Inside the Box) also shed light on her eventual returns in 2021 and 2022. She now views those situations in a different light; those returns were less problematic for Drew as she mentioned she had moved on from her initial emotions and anxieties and now that she felt empowered and felt completely removed from those past concerns. “I have no attachment to [the show] at all. I had zero anxiety [going back because] I don’t need anything from anyone on that set anymore. They’re not responsible for my livelihood anymore. They’re not responsible for my success or my joy… I’m like, ‘Hey! This is a fun spot to come visit.’” This shows a very mature and insightful perspective to past issues that could have lingered had she not overcome and let go. This emphasizes her growth and that she remains extremely satisfied with where her career and future goes!

Drew's firing was controversial, leaving her feeling completely blindsided; something that was amplified considering the sudden nature of her dismissal, after having spent so many years and having so many projects under Rhimes. The potential reasons are complex and multifaceted, though one possibility centers around the showrunner change:  Shonda Rhimes stepped down in 2015; Krista Vernoff took over in 2017. According to Vernoff, Drew’s exit was merely a creative choice;  intended to add another fresh aspect to those existing and upcoming storyline arcs! However, Drew seemingly interprets this far differently and her responses highlight this viewpoint.

It's not unusual for shows to let long-term actors go! And that's understandable; as creative renewal happens to almost all successful television shows.  Drew’s nine years on Grey's Anatomy might have made her expect another contract – explaining the hurt feelings and shock involved following her firing.
