More than 20 years have gone by since the Jackson trilogy ended, hence a clear challenge for Mortensen's Aragorn comeback—or for that matter, the return of any Lord of the Rings cast member—in The Hunt for Gollum. Mortensen was in his early to mid-forties when the three movies were initially showing in theaters; today he is 65. Though the details of the narrative for The Hunt for Gollum have not yet been revealed, the one that seems most rational for the film comes from a plot point drawn from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings appendices.
The Hunt for Gollum so surely presents a lot of important problems, most of which derive from the movie's alleged simultaneous occurrence with Jackson's films.

Once The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum's confirmation from director Andy Serkis, Middle-earth is poised to once more take front stage on film.
In a recent GQ interview, Mortensen reveals that he is willing to resume his Aragorn performance in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The actor underlines, meanwhile, that the narrative should handle the character correctly and, more importantly, respect his age. Regarding his prospective comeback, Mortensen answered as follows:
Though not mentioned in Jackson's movie, Gandalf and Aragorn are shown searching for Gollum for around two decades following Frodo's Ring acquisition in an attempt to stop him from providing Sauron with knowledge regarding the Hobbit. Serkis's movie most likely will address this, so Aragorn's age in the next movie would be the same as it was in The Fellowship of the Ring. Given Mortensen's comment presumably verifying that the movie has to consider his current 20-year age, it's probably going to be a deal-breaker for him.
Recasting the character, however, would present challenges of its own and it is hard to see any actor effectively inhabiting Mortensen's role. The Hunt for Gollum, then, surely raises a lot of important questions, most of which result from the movie's claimed simultaneous running alongside Jackson's films. Though he is at least open to the concept, it is still to be seen whether Mortensen will really return as Aragorn for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
