Update on Major Production for Sheriff Country
Sheriff Country has updated significantly. Morena Baccarin plays Sheriff Mickey Fox, the sister of ex-Division Chief Sharon Leone (D Diane Farr), the mother of the flagship show's central character Bode (Max Thieriot), in CBS' Fire Country's spinoff. The forthcoming Sheriff Country had a backdoor pilot in the season 2 episode "Alert the Sheriff," which ran on April 12 and introduced the character ahead of her show's premiere in the 2025-2026 season.
According to TVLine, a significant update on pre-production of Sheriff Country—which has already been ordered straight to series—has come in. The executive producer and showrunner of the spinoff has formally been assigned Matt Lopez. Given this appointment, it appears that other behind-the-scenes tasks—including fleshing out a writers room—will be completed in quick order. The ball is now rolling and further announcements are probably forthcoming, even if it will still probably be some time before any more on- camera talent is revealed.
The Show Running Experience of Matt Lopez
Prior to joining the Fire Country Spinoff, Matt Lopez—not to be mistaken with Red, White, & Royal Blue director Matthew López—was most renowned for developing the show Promised Land. Starring John Ortiz and Cecilia Suárez, the family drama show had a troubled production history; its first five episodes aired on ABC before the last five debuted on Hulu and the show was canceled completely following one season.
Beyond that fleeting show, Lopez has a lot of writing experience mostly on projects including well-known LatinX characters. Lopez has already written two Latinx-infenced approaches to important IP titles. The first is the upcoming Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip, a Disney+ release starring Thom Nemer, Eva Longoria, Jesse Garcia, and Cheech Marin; the second is the remake of Father of the Bride starring Andy García which debuted on HBO Max (now Max). Before penning those titles, Lopez mostly wrote hit family films including 2010's The Sorcerer's Apprentice and 2009's Race to Witch Mountain. Among Lopez's other TV creations is the one- season Chris Noth crime drama Gone. Although the creator's television history has been brief, the fact that Sheriff Country is connected to an existing popular show can enable it flourish and turn out to be his longest-running Production thus. Particularly in light of the fantastic Fire Country season 2 ending, if Lopez and his potential partners play their cards well, spinoff interest might explode.
