Jeremy Renner Shares the Bourne 5 Pitch Including a Matt Damon Team-Up Approach
Jeremy Renner has outlined his idea for a Jason Bourne movie whereby he would have worked with series actor Matt Damon. Damon first gave his amnesiac assassin role life in The Bourne Identity from 2002. Apparently ending the story of the character, he would show up in two more sequels. Renner, as Aaron Cross, took the stage in The Bourne Legacy (2011) after Damon seemed to be done with the part. Renner and filmmaker Justin Lin were supposed to produce The Bourne Legacy 2, but Damon finally returned to be Jason Bourne's main actor working with seasoned Paul Greengrass (2016).
Renner talks on the never-made Bourne Legacy sequel in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actor acknowledges that, of course, nothing came to pass even though he was intrigued in combining the stories of the two characters once Damon and Greengrass chose to return. Renner said, "We were getting very far, to the point that Greengrass and Damon suddenly put one together and that became... When asked about how far into development he and Lin had come on the Bourne Legacy sequel, Let us cooperate here. Since we aimed to turn around and attempt to bring parallel worlds together. My thought was to get us together. Test us against one another and then we understand, "What are we doing?" Together you and I can smash all of them. You know, then you get Bourne and Cross together. That makes a good team. That would have been quite awesome.
Might Jeremy Renner go back to the Bourne Franchise?
Reception for The Bourne Legacy was uneven. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a 56% rating—the second-lowest score in the Jason Bourne run. With $276.1 million globally, the movie was a minor box office success—the second-lowest in the series. Conversely, Jason Bourne (2016) likewise had mediocre reviews but was a bigger box office hit, grossing $415.5 million.
Damon is clearly the more bankable actor, and his name is practically connected with the Bourne brand. Although it seems improbable Renner will play Cross in a future movie, it is not totally out of the question. The whole Bourne franchise's future is yet unknown, and it's not clear which way it will go.
Background of the Bourne Franchise
The action-thriller series The Bourne Franchise sprang from Robert Ludlum's Bourne book series. Beginning with The Bourne Identity (2002), Matt Damon starred as Jason Bourne, a man who discovers he was a top CIA assassin after retrieving his memory. His former employer tries to assassinate him to close off any lingering ties. In The Bourne Legacy, Jeremy Renner briefly assumed the mantle and played Aaron Cross. After one season, the television show Treadstone—which aimed to chronicle the agency behind the program—was discontinued.
Still a popular series is The Bourne Franchise. Fans are intrigued in a follow-up movie even if the direction of the series is yet unknown.
The Bourne Franchise: Analysing Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross
Though they look identical, the two main men in the Jason Bourne series are really rather distinct. Their strategies also vary even in terms of risk.
Both have their unique set of techniques and abilities even if they share some traits. Series aficionados will eagerly await a future movie and a study on how the narratives of every character will interact.
A New Bourne Film Under Development
Director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) is working on a new Bourne movie, but no casting information or story points have leaked. Although Damon has said he wants to come back, nothing has been decided and the script will probably determine whether or not he will feature in the movie. Although anything is conceivable, Renner's entry into the Jason Bourne series marks 12 years, and the mixed reaction to the movie suggests that a Cross and Bourne team-up might not be in store.
