Jason Momoa star of Warner Brothers and DC's Aquaman franchise officially is cast as the character Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie. This casting was confirmed by Deadline and directly by Jason Momoa via Instagram making this a dream project come to reality for him.
Momoa has been publicly linked to playing the Lobo role even before James Gunn joined Peter Safran at DC studios where he was very vocal about taking on the part of Lobo stating his enthusiasm directly via instagram following the confirmation. Momoa shared a screenshot from a past interview affirming his commitment to the part after the studios called.
Jason Momoa specifically described the Lobo character as perfect referencing how his extensive comic collection has Lobo as a favorite hero. Jason Momoa expressed to the press he had a strong wish to portray Lobo. Jason even suggested he would immediately agree if DC extended a Lobo role to him using the phrase "a fck yeah". Lobo originated on planet Czarnia as an anti-hero with an irreverent personality, superhuman capabilities and regenerative properties while having nearly complete invulnerability. Writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen co created Lobo who is commonly depicted as bounty hunter notorious for enjoying chaos and senseless destruction. Lobo's comic book debut occurred in Omega Men 3 in June 1983.
Specific plot points for Supergirl are yet unreleased as Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon has already joined the title role while Matthias Schoenaerts serves as villain Krem. Eve Ridley recently signed to portray Ruthye Mary Knolle along with Supergirl's official casting. Craig Gillespie serves as director for film from a script penned by Ana Nogueira using inspiration from the 2022 comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. DC bosses Gunn and Safran also will produce while Chantal Nong is an executive producer for project with production on set for January 13.
Warner Bros and DC view Momoa as a valuable figure to studio output due to the Aquaman franchise’s gross of 1.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts. Momoa has several future projects including A Minecraft Movie set for April 4 as well as the movie Animal Friends plus projects like Fast X Part 2 and Apple mini series Chief of War while also in Amazon MGM’s Wrecking Crew. Jason Momoa is currently represented by WME and Edelstein Laird & Sobel which show his presence across many production houses at once.
