Thieriot has been very open that the show is based on his life in Northern California along with his experiences during the 2017 North Bay Firestorm. The series attempts to capture the reality of what those on the frontlines endure. These real events were created to highlight a perspective on life and danger from people within those environments.
The core plot centers around Bode Donovan a young convict seeking redemption by joining a firefighting program in Northern California which returns him to his hometown. Each part is uniquely crafted to add context into Bode’s decision and shows his journey on a personal level.
The concept of having a prison firefighting program is prominent. The story follows as many individuals work with professional firefighters while having an impact on the towns they serve. All the while being held to strict rules within a program designed for people that had past issues that they were trying to redeem themselves from.
Fire Country has a strong cast that make up various members of the community including Bode. His interactions will show how those individuals navigate personal histories and present day challenges as all of their lives intermingle.
Bode is a complex character with his past catching up to him. Returning to the same place he left is also meant to serve as a tool for a new beginning and finding acceptance from old peers.
A diverse cast has made up this world including Billy Burke, Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr, Stephanie Arcila, Jordan Calloway, and Jules Latimer. These cast members add a great variety of backstories and each has different values which add both unique stories and complexities to relationships in the series. They demonstrate a need for balance with work responsibilities while battling personal demons.
Amid a recent event the show was pulled from its normal schedule in response to sensitivity over wildfires taking place in Southern California. As such, CBS choose a rerun from other programs in place of “Fire Country” out of respect for those impacted. This shows how important real life events become in a show's schedule to make sure appropriate decisions are being made.
CBS opted for two back-to-back reruns of “NCIS: Sydney” and then a rerun of “S.W.A.T” replacing Fire Country for that scheduled day. This was part of an overall view by the network in being respectful of tragedy. No production schedules will be delayed at this point as most of “Fire Country” is actually filmed in British Columbia. It's unknown at this time if there may be future issues to cause a show change in the near future.
New episodes of the series are scheduled to return January 31st, with plots picking up from where previous episodes have left off. The second half of the season will tackle personal relationship issues such as love triangles and unresolved tensions for specific main characters .
The mid-season return will hopefully delve more into what is going on with several characters such as “Eve”, Gabriela and “Jake” while bringing back the tension with the cliff hanger of Bode and Audrey that left them in an unusual place. With cliffhangers the audience expects more from this second half of the season to add substance.
“Fire Country” is known for its emphasis on human emotion as well as focusing on teamwork and danger with high risk conditions. As the series has made use of real life examples it gives way for a true appreciation for all those involved with fighting wildfires.
