Benedict Cumberbatch's psychological thriller Eric has gone to be a streaming hit. Filmed in 1980s New York City and produced by Abi Morgan, the Netflix series centers on puppeteer Victor (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose kid disappears. This starts him on an unsettling path to try the titular seven-foot-tall monster puppet in solving the disappearance. Transparent's Gaby Hoffmann, Ozark's McKinley Belcher III, Vida's Roberta Colindrez, Dan Fogler of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Wire's Clarke Peters, and The Office's David Denman also make up the Eric cast.
Eric has ranked third on the global Top 10 list of English-language TV shows Netflix computed for the week of May 27 through June 2. This is a result of 6.8 million people aggregating a total of 36.5 million viewing hours in the four days the show was available on the platform following its May 30 premiere. Toping the chart, the only shows that beat it were the third week of Bridgerton season 3 and the new docuseries Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikHub.
During its first week, a new Netflix show often finds place in the Top 10 list. Nonetheless, by landing at No. 3, the show has shown that it has connected with viewers since it might have came in quite lower, like one of the other debut series of the week, Geek Girl, which debuted at No. 7 with 18.9 million viewing hours. The Eric reviews, which have been mostly good and result in a solidly Fresh 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, could be one reason the show's instant popularity stems from.
Cumberbatch himself might also be a factor behind the popularity of the show. Though most famously known for portraying Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the performer has developed a pattern of appearing in either critical successes, financial hits, or both. Covering the gamut over his career, he has developed a broad following that might make him a major draw for the new thriller.
Out of 13 championships in the 2020s alone, Cumberbatch has scored 13 Fresh. Between them, his ventures have gathered almost a dozen Oscar nominations. Among them, Spider-Man: No Way Home rose to be the seventh most grossing film ever made globally. Given the reputation of his star, Netflix's Eric's success is not totally unexpected. Although it is still to be seen if it can go higher on the chart, given its performance in only a fraction of its first week, it appears rather feasible.
