Greyoll: Clarified Who The Giant White Dragon Is
Based on the account of " Greyoll's Roar," the massive white sleeping dragon of Cela is Greyoll, the mother of all dragons in the Elden Ring realm. Greyoll is a significant person in the history of the Lands Between, originally governed by Dragons prior to Queen Marika's and Lord Godfrey's dominion.
Killing Greyoll is therefore like demolishing a treasured monument; granted, the white dragon may lie dormant and looks to have no genuine power anymore, but sacrificing a hallowed being for the sake of greed and bloodlust seems pointless evil - especially since there are better rune farms in Caelid. View just how simple (and depressing) murdering Greyoll this manner is in this YouTube video from Fidel Nacho:
Elden Ring: Why Should You Not Kill the Big White Dragon of Caelid?
Starting a fresh game by killing the slumber white dragon Greyoll of Caelid appears crucial for many Elden Ring players for simple rune acquisition. The enormous dragon does not defend itself, hence initially it would seem that there are not too many better strategies for a rookie Tarnished to rapidly get plenty of runes. But going up and killing this massive dragon without thinking about its backstory or the repercussions of Greyoll's death can detract from the game's experience.
One must face Elden Ring's massive white dragon in battle if one is to understand it. Found in Caelid's northeastern part, the massive white beast lies surrounded under five, smaller dragon protection. Defeating these five dragons will cause the larger one to die; but, players have discovered that they can slip behind them all and just kill the giant white dragon instead for an easy rune farm in early game of Elden Ring. Doing this releases its fabled incantation at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion, therefore revealing the secret of its identity.
Don't kill the Great White Dragon of Caelid on a Whim.
Maybe the more crucial reason players should not murder Greyoll is that it lessens the game's experience. Elden Ring stresses free will hence players may approach their path to the Elden Throne anyway they wish. Starting the game with 50,000 runes, particularly on the first time through, seems counter to what Elden Ring is supposed to be: a game in which players conquer obstacles.
Being a FromSoftware game, Elden Ring is renowned for its challenging nature. Still, that does not mean every section of Lands Between is difficult. From Software drives players to expLore Limgrave by making Elden Ring's bosses too difficult for the average low-level Tarnished to reasonably beat. Bypassing this by leveling up extremely rapidly with tons of runes can thus provide a Lands Between that seems neither large nor hazardous, but rather is a largely simple road towards whichever fight is next.
When You Should Think About Killing Greyoll in Elden Ring
Although defeating the Elder Dragon Greyoll with the simple cheesing technique results in missing out on Lore and a rather differently constructed boss encounter, there are, in fact, benefits to eradicating this field boss in Caelid. The first and most clear advantage is being able to rapidly claim 50,000 runes — and, most significantly, without much effort except some waiting.
Although conquering each of the surrounding dragons in Elden Ring will presumably earn players more, 50,000 Runes is a lot and this can be an instantaneous level-up. This is especially helpful if players are not really interested in killing each of the dragon's five children or are already enmeshed in the lore around it. Sometimes completing the minimal stat requirements with a basic level-up will suffice to guarantee a player can utilize a new weapon.
Dragon Communion Incantations from Elden Ring
Greyoll's Roar primarily serves to lower the attack power and defense of foes within a certain radius of the player; it requires 50 FP to employ. Rotten Breath is quite handy in most cases, so even if these debuffs might be helpful, Dragon Incantations like Smarag's Glintstone Breath and Theodorix's Magma could be better suited to players who like doing spectacular damage, Rotten Breath is remarkably useful in most circumstances and nobody needs to slaughter any sleeping animals to obtain it.

Dragons in Elden Ring are essentially not the enemy of the Tarnished at all.
Apart from a few exceptions, dragons typically wander about until they sense their territory under danger. While fighting in self-defense sounds acceptable enough, attacking one who not only lacks the ability to protect herself but also carries cultural significance in the Lands Between feels more blasphemy than Melina's wish to burn the Erdtree.
Destroying such a significant portion of the Lands Between's past is simply criminal, historically. Although Elden Ring lacks a morality system, the game's narrative deftly tells a complicated story of strength, bravery, morality, and justice none of which apply to the Tarnished should they choose to vanquish Greyoll.
