Gambit's Cut Scene in Deadpool & Wolverine: Why Marvel Made That Choice!

Deadpool & Wolverine: That Missing Gambit Scene – Explained!

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) was a HUGE hit! It brought Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to the MCU; included a ton of awesome cameos, Easter eggs, and even a long-awaited live-action debut for Channing Tatum as Gambit! Yet, eagle-eyed fans noticed a deleted scene.  Specifically, Gambit's ending didn't make it into the theatrical cut.   Why? We talked to editors Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid for answers, giving an exclusive scoop on this amazing cut scene!

This movie delivered tons of fan service, yet it raised some crucial questions among many audience members: Why would such an important character be excluded from a main cinematic production?

The Editors Spill the Beans: Why Gambit's Ending Got Cut

Here's what Shane Reid told us: "A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had [was] the Legacy reel [which] was a really important part of the process. It was something that we built, actually, while we were on strike, and that was a sentiment to come off the film with, and then it was from there, we knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out. I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda, and I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience's expectations in that sense."

He then explains that it was sometimes included; sometimes cut. "So we had this wonderful piece and it was in at times and out. This is the brilliance of Ryan and his understanding of marketing and social media and how to use it, so they had other plans for what you could do with that kind of material and how you could put it out there and get the audience's appetite warmed up for it, but also leave the audience with a Deadpool movie that, through and through, feels like a Deadpool movie and ending it the way it did, just always felt right."

The editors mention how the “Legacy Reel” in the credits is a seriously important addition, focusing on previous Marvel works. This added value which makes a huge amount of sense considering the immense changes in the MCU that occur; especially after the addition of various characters, storylines, and rights owned that completely impact that entire creative process.

Why This Made Sense (Even if It's a Little Disappointing): The Big Picture

The reasons behind the cut are totally valid; this becomes increasingly clear upon consideration of other aspects involved within this movie production and how they all impact that ending decision: The Deadpool trilogy needed closure and having that focus shifted by the emergence of Gambit from the Void would have harmed the main focus which the creators desperately tried to keep in place during its various productions! Adding this cut scene as another post-credits moment for an unrelated storyline makes even more sense considering those events already occurring!

Using the ending credits to look back at 20th Century Fox's Marvel movies felt especially meaningful; a creative choice that created an incredibly moving tribute; generating that moment of respectful commemoration that many fans really loved. It’s that thoughtful consideration of many facets that actually enhanced and created added meaning to its closing scene.

It might sting a bit, missing Gambit's escape. But it totally makes sense to cut the scene.  Maybe they are going to build upon it later? They are hinting about his possible role in the Multiverse Saga, maybe we see this pivotal moment expand; and fully become the climax in the Gambit storyline and those upcoming storylines. Until then? Let's keep an eye out; the cut does not stop him from showing up somewhere in later installments and even creates opportunities which otherwise may not be realized.

Deadpool & Wolverine totally delivered— but also leaves viewers somewhat in suspense! This carefully made choice, however made sense; maintaining focus on what would ultimately become a larger storyline that focuses on Deadpool. While missing Gambit's scene sucks; that specific storytelling approach highlights Marvel's forward thinking.   It avoids cheap cameos; maintains integrity and leaves opportunities for later.
