Bill Lawrence, co-creator of Shrinking, chatted with The Hollywood Reporter at the Season 2 premiere in Los Angeles. Lawrence spilled the beans on the behind-the-scenes drama with Goldstein's casting!

He made a funny observation: Goldstein had to shave his beard for the role! This was funny because it made Goldstein "miserable," a joke that highlighted the fun dynamic behind the production. On a serious note, Lawrence admitted to falling into the trap of typecasting. Seeing Goldstein as Roy Kent made it tough to see him as the actually incredibly sweet guy that Goldstein is!

Lawrence was close to excluding his creative partner and that's where Jason Segel stepped in. It’s hard to ignore his impact on the set, as Segel knew that Goldstein was just right for the part! Goldstein's role looks set for massive success. Lawrence also explained how his Shrinking role really needs audiences to fall for him.

A New Character

We're not getting to learn exactly what his part in Shrinking is just yet! What Lawrence confirms, is that Goldstein is playing someone very sweet and caring. It seems like Goldstein's character has a different tone, going off in a different direction, from what was portrayed as Roy Kent, suggesting the move might offer Goldstein, fans and even Segel some unique excitement! That's exactly the point.

It could be that he will end up working with Jimmy Laird! That's right! The series finale from Season 1 gave viewers the sense of where Jimmy Laird might go and the choices he makes. We will have some crazy twists! Goldstein's character looks like they will interact with Laird giving "Shrinking" some crazy and unique, fresh elements.
