America's Got Talent's Longtime showrunner Exits After 19 Seasons!
The entertainment world got some big news recently: Jason Raff, the legendary showrunner of America's Got Talent (AGT), is out after 19 seasons! That's a seriously long run, folks. This legendary figure was behind 482 original episodes and 140 hours of live shows—and his departure was all due to budget cuts, as he informed Deadline the day after the end of season 19 in September.
Raff also masterminded and oversaw several spin-offs too: America's Got Talent: The Champions, AGT: Extreme, America's Got Talent: All-Stars, and America's Got Talent: Fantasy League; further demonstrating just how vital his contribution has become for the show.
Now that is an astonishing amount of commitment. Sam Donnelly will take the helm of season 20; which is being co-produced by Fremantle and Syco Entertainment. Its release has already been scheduled for May 2025, marking the start of the show continuing on without the person behind many years of planning.
Get this – AGT’s start sounds super unexpected. Raff mentions to Deadline that a DVD from a British show called Paul O’Grady’s Got Talent was what launched it all! This UK network originally turned it down. But NBC saw massive potential in June 2006, leading to AGT’s beginning and those incredible events!
Raff; this guy who'd already had work with NBC’s Dateline, and those early reality shows like Average Joe, already had his place secure at NBC; leading to his taking that now-legendary role in that new and exciting variety show; this particular job was given after many discussions, leading to his selection of the show, over those others.
AGT’s success story is full of memorable people: Simon Cowell, of course, alongside many others. Some remain longer than others—from Regis Philbin to Terry Crews as hosts and those iconic judges including Brandy, Mel B, David Hasselhoff, Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne, Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Gabrielle Union, Julianne Hough and Sofia Vergara. The impact of these personalities added huge viewing audiences. This constant mix also shows an evolving approach for adapting to modern audiences.
Raff’s most cherished moments came through those unbelievable discoveries of undiscovered talent and those amazing goosebumps from unbelievable performances; realizing those changes that occurred in that individuals lives! The production challenges are insane and even include that time somebody got shot by a flaming arrow and dealing with producing during that crazy COVID period!
That’s nearly two decades! 19 seasons. The news hit Raff completely unexpectedly, and this loss definitely makes his response sound bittersweet, describing just why he remained with the show. And now there are plans! Raffs own production company Furry Prawn Productions means more awesome projects, possibly beyond reality shows—that might involve working with those famous and beloved personalities!
Fremantle's COO (Suzanne Lopez) lauded Raff's massive impact ("His vision and creativity are top-notch"). This highlights his incredibly important impact on what has become “the world’s largest talent showcase”, further cementing Raff's status as something quite noteworthy within that history.
Jason Raff’s exit after so many years; a legendary stint is certainly going to be noticed, showing an end to an era for the show. While the show will obviously continue; those kinds of massive contributions are hard to easily replace and may significantly impact the future seasons, leading to possibly weaker plot elements later on, however its successful run shows the ongoing capacity of adapting to changing situations which remain largely in line with modern audiences! Donnelly's big task is upholding AGT’s amazing legacy, all building on what came before. It's a massive and immense task that many within the audience and those involved would eagerly await. This whole thing sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
