This new January 2025 release from Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell is a total reboot, aiming to bring fresh terror to this legendary creature. The trailers tease some intense family drama in the Florida wilderness; hinting towards survival and, importantly, showcasing just how transformative that Werewolf curse actually is!

Whannell recently opened up about the design at New York Comic Con. This guy went deep; seriously researching other Movies' interpretations, and even surprisingly cited Heath Ledger's Joker as inspiration. He was inspired, however, by how they stayed true to the essence while creating something totally new, completely demonstrating his overall goal with this production, making this particular interpretation unique. This was everything from classic depictions to those more modern versions in titles like American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and Dog Soldiers. Instead, the design shows far more subtle cues; almost completely human— sharp teeth and small claws; not having much fur or an overly-muscular, altered physique. This very specific choice is both controversial, but well-thought out: actor Christopher Abbott's Wolfman looks more fitting to appear in a psychological thriller or even slasher film; and that choice alone might be precisely the point! There are plenty of examples demonstrating this very aspect of Hollywood production and collaboration! He literally approved everything based upon this prototype. That alone demonstrates how closely both people understood exactly what that ultimate result needs to look like; generating an unusually strong level of artistic cohesiveness in that prototype image and showing great professional cooperation between these two talented individuals.

Our Take: Is This Redesign a Genius Stroke Or A Major Miss?

It is not surprising, that despite being so drastically different and having created some controversial takes amongst his fanbase, the impact that Whannell made remains surprisingly effective. The Wolfman's look is unprecedented in the genre—this however carries an important caveat; its subtlety raises immense issues and generates debate within those involved. This is very intentionally done, focusing on those subtle shifts, generating immense controversy among his fanbase which directly results in those unexpected questions about that larger artistic vision and his intentions that no one knows.

Whannell's aim? To create something unlike everything we've ever seen. Whether this works; that very specific element depends on how well he carries through this visual change into that full storyline; if we discover later, he used additional technology to dramatically enhance this specific aspect of his monster and its overall aesthetic appearance, his design vision works marvelously!
