Tom Welling Interview: Mafia Wars Movie & Smallville Sequel Update!

Fans of Tom Welling are always excited about what he does next! From his iconic role as Superman on Smallville, to playing Cain in Lucifer, he is one of the best!

Mafia Wars:

Welling just came out with an awesome new movie, called Mafia Wars, that takes a step away from superheroes! It is something that everyone can relate to, though its themes aren't quite as outlandish as many of Welling's previous roles!

In this gripping story, Welling takes on Terry Jacobs! The plot follows his efforts after early release from jail. His life quickly goes haywire! After trying to rejoin his family. The Mafia creates problems with Terry becoming a key player, tasked with bringing down the infamous head of the Italian Mafia, Griff. The movie, was written and directed by Scott Windhauser and also stars Cher Cosenza and Cam Gigandet who play Spinx and Griff, respectively. The movie is available on digital, starting 2024.

A Different Kind of Action:

Welling was interviewed about Mafia Wars and he got to discuss how his latest role differs from previous roles. Welling mentions how it was very interesting for him because Terry is different from any other action hero he had ever played before!

Terry cannot use physical force to get out of situations as he's often caught off-guard, leading to these compelling interactions.

Terry’s situation, is far more grounded in reality. This also allowed Welling to bring these aspects out and give "Terry" his unique feel! This is shown, through some cool confrontations and interesting reactions with Griff (a very interesting character)!

A Morally Grey Character:

One of the things that Welling talked about, was the importance of Terry's personality, specifically how he isn't the typical 'goody two-shoes' character and Welling really highlighted Terry's unique perspective.

Welling describes him as more committed to other people and cares more about other's needs than he cares about himself. The interesting dynamic is this is a survival situation but one of such profound impact that gives a whole other lens of who Terry is!

The Making of Mafia Wars:

What stands out about "Mafia Wars" and is very interesting? Well, it was a collaborative journey.

Welling even commented on this element of teamwork from his fellow actors Cher Cosenza and Cam Gigandet, but not just the actors, this whole dynamic made a lot more sense with director and writer Scott Windhauser who made it all happen. Welling mentioned he didn't even know Cam Gigandet's lines as his method for being creative in these roles brought a whole lot of fun and also helped add depth and gave it more complexity to "Terry".

A Potential Sequel?

The end of the movie leaves fans wondering about more and hoping for something to come in the future!

Welling really likes his Terry character. It makes sense. He wants more stories with him and feels there could even be something big down the line that will only expand on his role even more and really explore Terry from other places across the world.

Smallville Sequel:

It’s impossible not to ask! Welling was able to talk about his previous projects! For some people its the biggest thing they will be asked about for a while. And what everyone really wants is more! A chance to revisit one of the greatest superhero series ever! The long awaited and anticipated animated Smallville sequel series is underway! But there's one really important component.

Warner Bros. and DC need to agree to get things started. It would be amazing to see this take off but there seems to be this big catch. Even Welling recognizes there are still hurdles to pass in bringing "Smallville" back! While Welling says he’s incredibly committed. It may take some time before they're able to deliver a sequel fans want.

Welling mentions how excited he and the actors Al Gough and Miles Millar are about giving the fans more. It shows it's not just about producing a movie that is a blockbuster, its something truly remarkable for all involved!

James Gunn's DC Universe:

Welling had an interesting insight and gave a sneak peek into what the team thinks about what's happening at DC, too! What’s very notable is the long time friends between Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, are very much aware of what’s up! In fact they have been sharing their excitement!

Welling talks about following what's going on in the superhero universes! He watches what’s coming out from both DC and Marvel.

Welling's passion for these kinds of movies shows just what he looks to get from them. And it would certainly bring the world more super powered adventures in many variations. It shows that many of the producers are trying to reach back into some classic titles.
