The new teaser trailer for "Superman" released on December 19 showcased the Man of Steel with symbolic first words "Home Take me home." These few words set up a theme in James Gunn's new DC Universe. The trailer formally launched the new direction with the intent to integrate a wide cast of characters. This new Superman played by David Corenswet is coming home to the broader DC universe following the direction by co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
The "Superman" teaser reveals David Corenswet as the bespectacled Clark Kent working at Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet. Rachel Brosnahan appears as Lois Lane both at The Daily Planet with her professional colleague and also by Superman's side. Nicholas Hoult also shows himself in the trailer playing the role of Lex Luthor clearly plotting and scheming for the coming storyline. Skyler Gisondo and Pruitt Taylor Vince are Jimmy Olsen photographer at The Daily Planet and Jonathan Kent respectively adding some elements of familiar faces to audiences. Krypto the Superdog rescues a wounded Superman who crash lands in arctic ice highlighting some of the comic elements now brought to film.
The movie will also feature some first-time cinematic debuts such as Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, with his impervious sphere. Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner of the Green Lantern corps confronting Superman with clear intent that feels quite unfriendly. Isabela Merced plays winged Hawkgirl. Anthony Carrigan who has pale features will play Metamorpho. These reveals underscore Gunn's intention for Superman to have relationships with many different kinds of superheroes .
James Gunn confirmed during the Q&A after the December 17 preview that his intention with Superman is to make sure "he lives in a world with superheroes". Gunn specifically stated his films would embrace the whole mythology from the Superman comics . Gunn emphasized a desire to portray Superman's connections to other heroes, some who become his close friends and others who could be construed as rivals. He wanted to take what was loved from Superman comics and portray them in a realistic way on film for audiences to enjoy that would bring them closer to the core characters that everyone has grown up reading.
Gunn’s vision draws on influences such as "Game of Thrones" so as to create a realistic universe even though with the inclusion of fantastical elements adding richness to this cinematic environment. Gunn expressed clear intentions that this new series will deviate from established norms of superhero movie by creating a deeply complex and diverse characters with more complicated interconnected plot structures across multiple films for the overall universe. Gunn is trying to build a detailed ecosystem for future DC productions with this first movie in the new DC Universe.
James Gunn struggled whether or not to include the familiar John Williams theme composed for the 1978 Superman movie because it is an iconic connection. The soundtrack uses elements of the theme with an electric guitar version that acts as a fresh take but has elements for nostalgia purposes for audiences who loved that musical theme in past film renditions . John Murphy a recurring Gunn collaborator known for his music composition in films such as "The Suicide Squad" in 2021 and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023 reinterprets iconic parts while contributing additional original music for film. Gunn involved John Murphy very early in the production sending early versions of the screenplay two years prior which led to some music already being created for the movie and played on set further enhancing cohesion of elements during active filming. This balance between both the classic plus novel forms makes for an extremely dynamic movie project.
Gunn's movie emphasizes the significance of goodness which acts as an important theme within this movie universe. Gunn stated the current climate makes it vital to produce and promote stories that contain the value of human kindness despite any difference in political beliefs showing optimism even during the roughest times. Gunn also noted a belief in human beings essential kindness despite all ideological and political divisions as people try their best to be good according to their internal belief systems while still striving to be seen in a positive light which the movie tries to represent for the new DC Universe and characters within this universe.
Corewnswet conveyed a clear understanding of the character stating he has a personal connection to Superman’s vision of goodness in human beings despite flaws showcasing deep respect to character he was portraying in the upcoming project. Corenswet found much inspiration from his brother in-law in order to develop the more powerful physique of his on screen Superman version . Corenswet had a difficult time sharing his version of the character early in the productions because of his concerns with spoilers which was an obstacle for this project to gain public momentum prior to filming.
Brosnahan said Lois Lane changed to suit each new generation that portrays the intrepid journalist making her relevant for each new version of character . Brosnahan also indicated this new Lois would tackle problems faced in contemporary world as a print journalist whose career is becoming more of “an endangered art form.” Lois constantly searches beyond what is normally seen questioning all forms of information making for a unique addition to film version . Hoult’s Lex Luthor version has a clear ruthless intelligence wanting to outsmart Superman from multiple strategic viewpoints. Hoult said it is the hope of this version to highlight an understandable if morally complex methodology used by his Lex that shows the character is coming from an ideology which he feels would benefit human beings, even if others have difficulty seeing things from his own perspective.
Gunn mentioned a long and drawn out production process that determined the new design and his major issue of not having what he termed "a wet t-shirt" or fake muscles in the suit. The final design process resulted in many revisions showing that each part of Superman’s suit went through a lot of attention from the designers to bring forth the ideal result . Corenswet said there was never just ‘one first time’ putting on the entire costume given its multi-iterative development but he experienced seeing reactions from other cast crew members with his final iteration. Nicholas Hoult described seeing Corenswet in full Superman costume as a unique emotional experience for him plus rest of the crew when David came to the set with flying and action shots that also impressed everyone there.
Corenswet mentioned witnessing kids and their reaction to his appearance within the Superman suit was something very special. Gunn recounted he had expressed that the bright colored costume looking silly at one point until Corenswet explained his character is designed to create safety and security among young kids because that was what Superman meant in his view for a generation of comic readers . The Superman movie will arrive in theaters on July 11 showing a new take of the world's beloved iconic superhero for fans globally.

The trailer achieved 250 million views over million social media posts across many platforms confirming its successful launch as an immediate success story with impressive market penetration from initial release according to Gunn on social media.. David Corenswet is Superman as the star of the film with other cast including Rachel Brosnahan Nicholas Hoult plus Maria Gabriela de Faría also featuring a vast cast with roles played by Skyler Gisondo Sara Sampaio and others adding breadth to cinematic interpretation. James Gunn stated "we do have a battered Superman" at start of movie with message focusing on idea that despite issues many people will choose the road that makes them a positive part of overall world view while supporting idea for goodness in individuals as their foundation. Gunn states many previous projects have influenced his Superman such as prior works including movies by Zack Snyder plus The Donner project among other elements showing creative team’s depth and awareness for what has come before their version. . “Top Gun: Maverick” was another project that has directly impacted how creative ideas are used within the film industry.
Gunn clarified the use of many DC elements for inspiration with influence from the animated universes in addition to comic books for the Silver Age era of Superman as source material specifically All Star Superman a major source for his portrayal. The shoot recently added an additional day and a half of “pickup shots” with added elements to bring a richer dynamic and final form without major scene re-shoots demonstrating flexibility during production.
DC and Warner Brothers dropped their trailer for the Superman film bringing many conversations across all media sources and sparking positive interest by large groups of DC fans. David Corenswet visually embodies Man of Steel plus a more subtle Clark Kent with his glasses and slightly ill fitted suits. However many fans did express a fondness to prior representation as the beloved Henry Cavill with both filling the large shoes in different ways that also sparked debate. Some viewers have expressed concerns on the number of new superpowered characters such as Guy Gardner Hawkgirl and Kaiju seen during teaser suggesting more attention was focused on creating expanded world instead of main protagonist and primary antagonist. Also cinematography was another hot topic for fans to debate with moments of great visual acuity mixed with scenes appearing overly saturated or too much CGI which was previously present in the DCEU and another point of concern among various viewers of the trailer.
While color palates were notably brighter that in the past there were also many concerns of visual overkill with color-grading and special effects making them slightly overbearing for viewing. Slow motion techniques seen in scenes have triggered some criticism from Zack Snyder fans with some suggesting PTSD based on how slow motion had been over utilized within his previous works. The movie comes to theatres July 11 which will showcase the vision of James Gunn for his Superman cinematic experience and viewers and critics are very excited and eager to observe more coming trailers for clearer perception of how this project will perform overall. The studio and all involved also need this new start and strong production to establish long term and ongoing support for the brand.
