Suicide Squad 3: Will it Happen? What We Know (and What We Don't!)
Suicide Squad 3: Officially Unconfirmed, But Is There Still Hope?
So, a Suicide Squad 3 movie? It's not exactly on the official DCU (DC Universe) schedule... yet! There’s always that slight chance it could happen later, even without James Gunn at the helm. That's the beauty of these Suicide Squad stories, which allow major narrative shakeups because, let's face it, tons of characters always end up kicking the bucket! That's also precisely what makes The Suicide Squad (2021) such a refreshing change and was precisely the very reason why many viewers who were initially somewhat apathetic toward DC productions completely loved it and it continues to be loved!
James Gunn took over David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad, released almost three years after WB's announcement. The sequel, The Suicide Squad came out both in theaters and on HBO Max in August 2021 and brought back many stars; coupled with that amazingly diverse new squad making The Suicide Squad feel super exciting! This came at the end of those early DCEU days, and we are all now living in a time of massive change as the DCU reboots under Gunn and Peter Safran is in full gear; and making huge changes, making questions around Suicide Squad 3's status a big deal.
James Gunn's Comments: A "No," But Not a Definite "Never!"
To make it simple; there has not yet been a formal announcement to proceed with making Suicide Squad 3 and Gunn's 2023 interview with the Inside Of You podcast poured some cold water on hopes—when asked, he said "no," explaining further: “we’ve talked about it... but the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff. And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.” This kind of explanation showcases how he really needs to allocate effort wisely.
However, Gunn has hinted that this might be reconsidered and some characters from The Suicide Squad could show up elsewhere, potentially including even Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). Her importance, along with characters such as John Cena's Peacemaker, within the current DCU plan (“Gods and Monsters”) does create potential. A Suicide Squad 3 remains unlikely, however many elements and characters are still quite actively developing, hinting towards this particular franchise's long potential continuation.
Potential Suicide Squad 3 Cast: A Brand-New Team?
Officially, the cast? Unknown! Yet looking back, the prior movies showed massive change within the rosters; retaining few from Suicide Squad to The Suicide Squad: characters such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), remain central. It’s uncertain whether Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) could possibly be revived since his demise in The Suicide Squad. But a fresh Task Force X is super possible! And they wouldn’t necessarily need some returning star, creating that potential for even more diversity; it also makes future creative possibilities become extremely unique; generating a whole other level of excitement compared to continuing old and relatively exhausted narrative elements.
Story Possibilities: Where Could Suicide Squad 3 Take Us?
Storytelling with these characters continues easily in new locations and plots. Peacemaker is poised to lead a new team (due to Rick Flag’s death), especially considering the huge impact of his appearance within the new DCU; showing an amazingly powerful character which can easily carry the torch forward for these kinds of high-stakes scenarios that typically showcase Task Force X’s uniquely lethal operations and extreme plot scenarios which ultimately define the series itself!
Other potential threads include Project Starfish. While rehashing it wouldn’t quite work (especially given that Starro's demise, and the plot resolved from it), this presents plenty of potential which doesn’t necessarily mean going completely backward to redo earlier storylines; however some new threat would logically emerge. Luckily; there are additional things already currently in development and could impact what kind of potential might become possible.
The DCU's Growing Suicide Squad Universe
James Gunn isn't finished with the world begun in The Suicide Squad, folks! That was a smash hit! Its sequel, Peacemaker season 2 (releasing in 2025) and some of the characters are appearing in Creature Commandos (an animated series premiering December 2024) plus James Gunn's Superman movie!
It will showcase Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) who was already set up during Peacemaker’s run, adding another powerful character to impact storylines moving forward! These plots directly demonstrate how effectively Gunn is using The Suicide Squad as a launching pad for further development! It shows these incredible threads even expand beyond films.
Conclusion: The Future of Suicide Squad Remains Intriguing!
While a formal Suicide Squad 3 is unconfirmed, James Gunn's current work hints towards its possibility and there’s plenty of exciting options. It demonstrates that those ongoing story lines will develop into something amazing! Peacemaker, potentially Amanda Waller and these additional characters could easily maintain that incredibly impressive narrative throughout many upcoming media forms!
