Succession, the critically acclaimed HBO drama series which concluded after four seasons, has garnered much attention. The complex character studies and plot lines have created intrigue that has had viewers interested in what's coming next from creator Jesse Armstrong .
Jesse Armstrong is not planning on doing any more TV series and has chosen a different route by creating a movie under HBO Films. It is based on his original idea, which means this will be unlike anything in the past and unique for both past and new audiences. He is also creating the project with frequent collaborator and previous Executive Producer Frank Rich.
The new project centers around four friends meeting up during a global financial crisis which creates tension that viewers of Succession can relate to in many ways. It also shows Armstrongs ability to tell stories in an original method and from a new angle. This also explores his social political themes as a continued approach to what he is working on as a storyteller.
Succession ran for four seasons showcasing the power dynamics and family relationships within the Roy family’s media conglomerate. The high acclaim comes from many sources ranging from critical acclaim and high viewer ratings.
"Succession" is responsible for winning 19 Emmys out of its 75 nominations as well as three Outstanding Drama Series. This created much recognition within the show and what is done with quality characters and development.
Armstrong has many projects outside of "Succession" demonstrating his work in the film, and TV industry. He is considered versatile with the many ways in which his work has reached different forms of media.
The creator is known for many various shows, one of them being "Peep Show", and has been involved in “Black Mirror”. His films credits include the Oscar nominated adapted screen play for "In the Loop". With all of these ventures it gives evidence of his extensive experience in media both large and small scale.
Armstrong is still writing the script for the project but the film is fast tracked for filming. While script writing is ongoing cast availability is also a focus to try and move into production as soon as possible. With all the focus for fast turnaround this can prove the project has much promise and vision that needs to be delivered to audiences soon.
This new approach that does not involve a limited series for streaming is unique to what he is previously known to deliver but it keeps his overall core strengths. The story still is similar to what he typically explores including social political landscapes which his viewers know him for. His ability to use the themes of power as he did in Succession shows how versatile the topic can be.
With the core story line being around an economic downfall it is very apparent this will allow his themes of how decisions affect power and those at the lower scale as he always has a keen sense on socioeconomic issues. His past projects with many different formats will allow him to create compelling characters once more within this new context of story.
The turmoil of an international financial crisis will allow the director to blend in his themes of human reactions when in times of pressure and stress to reveal truths as his audience has previously noted him to do in the past. His unique ability in character study is one that has drawn much support to his method.
By creating a feature film it shifts him away from what many expected from the creator of Succession. The fans had a desire to have more within the Roy's family saga. However this is an original idea as opposed to a spin off of anything in his past collection.
Instead of extending "Succession" into a potential spin off he moves to create original content in new ways which expands his skills and is unique for any long term fan who have enjoyed his work to this point. Armstrong now sets new direction for others who may be hoping to have a series as unique as "Succession" to be brought to audiences.
