Disney purchased Star Wars from George Lucas for $4.05 billion in 2010. That's a lot of cash!
id="a-universe-full-of-merchandise">A Universe Full Of MerchandiseDisney's taken a pretty aggressive approach! Since it took over. There's a bunch of new content out there in the Star Wars universe! Everything from shows like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.
But they haven't been afraid to keep expanding to the big screen as well with big hits like Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This makes the whole series one that has always been super controversial, leaving everyone debating just how Disney has taken over. But everyone's agreed that it's done one thing right- there's tons of awesome merchandise available!
Merchandise is Key
For those that don't keep up with the latest buzzwords! You may be shocked! The merchandise has created major returns, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter!
If that isn't mind blowing enough! In just a year's time, this series created $1 Billion! You'll hear about box office returns. Or about what the latest shows are performing like with Nielsen TV ratings. It's worth knowing about just how important merchandise is for movies.
The Star Wars franchise always puts it out there for fans to buy, and that includes how George Lucas got rich before the franchise went to Disney! And Lucas had the foresight! He saw a super awesome opportunity when he set up deals to manage those merchandise rights. No regrets, because those profits made his name as the big innovator!
You might have also heard this as well. There's also that "Baby Yoda" moment back in 2019, when Disney made the crazy move, that wasn't the best choice, not selling those cute figures, a mistake! It reportedly made Disney lose around $2.7 million.
But there's good news for those who want all of these cool, unique figures, those adorable creatures from The Mandalorian.
Is Star Wars Still Relevant?
Some Star Wars fans might be getting really tired of new releases. And for those that might have seen The Acolyte (a recent Disney+ release), the new season hasn't necessarily gotten great reactions! And may have actually gotten cancelled!
It seems like a big trend right now, with so much content being made in this series and all of the releases that are coming out for Disney, that some fans might be getting a bit overloaded. This is probably making them question whether this Franchise can survive, and continue being a fan-favorite!
But for those that think the series isn't selling out, the report may have you rethink that completely. The "merchandise" numbers are super interesting and definitely worth taking a closer look at!
What really comes out of all this information is just how powerful "Star Wars" has become, and continues to remain!
Those awesome toys. Plus every last product that comes out from a wide assortment of products are flying off shelves at the rate that they are! This means that Disney continues to search out those special chances that might give audiences what they want, but most importantly those key opportunities for big Profits, meaning the studio's love of this galaxy will go on!
You'll see that with new characters. As an example!
- The "Baby Yoda", who's now been officially labeled as "Grogu"
- That character became a big deal when the series The Mandalorian came out!
- Now, he will be a part of The Mandalorian's big-screen adventures and so the chances for merchandise to fly off shelves and increase the profits, looks to be almost endless.
That's why Disney will keep creating those "Star Wars" projects and continue giving us awesome characters. Who knows what else might come in the future, especially after seeing the kind of success that Star Wars merchandise continues to see! But it certainly will be another big event in a galaxy far far away, bringing the next big moments!
