Paramount+ is set to release Star Trek: Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh its first ever streaming Star Trek movie in January potentially opening pathways for many more streaming productions in the future. Olatunde Osunsanmi director known from his work on the series Star Trek Discovery communicated that he believes movie could lead to expansion with new forms of storytelling beyond standard television. The streaming premier on January 24th makes history as the first Star Trek streaming feature movie.
Olatunde Osunsanmi spoke of hoping that audiences embrace Star Trek: Section 31 to allow for exploring many more stories within Star Trek Universe as standalone film projects for release on streaming media services. He suggested in interviews this would help them develop the established narrative quicker than current approach of multiple TV series with the idea that releasing a ‘pop pop pop’ format. If love from the viewers continues he stated future possibilities are endless specifically in fertile areas as that previously shown with Section 31 series potentially adding brand recognition that will help make streaming format more viable.

A recent trailer reveals that Michelle Yeoh ’s Philippa Georgioiu embarks on an extremely crucial assignment “facing a threat unlike anything Starfleet has ever seen." Philippa Georgiou will gather Sam Richardson from Ted Lasso Omari Hardwick Humberly Gonzalez Rob Kazinsky Sven Ruygrok from One Piece and Kacey Rohl to assemble the perfect covert ops group that will contend with that danger shown in the Star Trek: Section 31 movie released this January.
The Section 31 movie initially began as a spin-off television series starring Michelle Yeoh after her first appearance in Star Trek: Discovery. Director Olatunde Osunsanmi revealed that Section 31’s story underwent considerable development starting in 2019 that required complete rework. Writer Craig Sweeney completely rebuilt multiple aspects of the original idea creating at least seven different versions during development from a television season then to numerous pilots before production finalized the script for current release.

The release will be first Star Trek movie since 2016's Star Trek: Beyond signaling large studio backing for release of future productions. Section 31 a secret Starfleet organization was first brought up in Star Trek Deep Space Nine showcasing a contrasting side of Federation and first appeared in Deep Space Nine during an encounter with Dr Julian Bashir. Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Stephen Behr established the concept of Section 31 showing how Roddenberry’s utopian world can be seen in the light of a more nuanced context to show how the organization operates beyond their mission parameters. Star Trek: Section 31 streaming debut starts January 24 on Paramount+.
