The Controversy

Let's start off by talking about the cast. One of the major criticisms was a decision by J.J. Abrams.

What seems crazy for "Star Trek Into Darkness" was how Abrams decided to create a movie very much inspired by "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan!"

  • This was more than an inspiration. Some fans thought it copied that great film almost exactly.

You can also find these issues being brought up around the choice for "Khan."!

  • Khan Noonien Singh (played by the wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch) was brought into a movie that fans were watching as it was coming together, and not just fans, but critics as well!

It turns out Khan, who was originally played by Ricardo Montalban in "Star Trek" films, was South Asian, meaning the new look and the actor to take over his role, changed everything.

When it comes down to this big controversy, a large number of people saw the movie, with almost everyone in the universe, not being happy about the whole concept, including some of those super hard-core fans!

  • The decision for a remake was something a lot of viewers felt like they had seen too many times, even before.

A long history Star Trek has given us plenty of amazing characters but Abrams did not bring a "Star Trek" movie that matched "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,". You could argue, they could have just recreated it. What seemed off-putting to fans of Star Trek, it was not enough to go into the realm of being the worst movie. That idea really stuck to Abrams. While the film had an amazing soundtrack that came from the fantastic Michael Giacchino, many still had a number of other concerns and a lot of negativity that brought attention to the Star Trek Into Darkness.

If it's about the negative criticisms:

  • A scene Carol Marcus
  • Alice Eve
  • She appeared with minimal clothing and seemed to be only to titillate.

It turns out that movie audiences were watching the #MeToo movement, with the awareness growing that those in powerful positions really needed to be held accountable for their actions! There were a lot of viewers and they thought this kind of behavior by Kirk was outdated, inappropriate, and was something to give viewers cause for criticism. The director didn't know how these actions would be received! You may get some laughs about Spock, shouting "KHAAANNN!" (it may have given viewers an instant meme), or the Klingons that took on an updated look! Fans were mixed.
