Smile 2: A Multi-Film Horror Franchise on the Horizon?

Smile 2: More sequels on the Horizon After a Terrifyingly Successful First Film!

Smile 2's Director Teases a Multi-Film Horror Franchise!

Get ready for more terrifying grins! Smile 2 director Parker Finn recently hinted at future sequels in a chat with Screen Rant! This news is massive. Remember how well Smile (2022) performed at the box office – pulling in a shocking $217.4 million worldwide on a tiny $17 million budget? It's no surprise that the studios are planning future projects after such overwhelming success! That combined with its incredibly positive critical reception really put that movie into the upper echelon of 2022's greatest horror successes! That is precisely why many are now hoping for the development and continuing success for a large Horror franchise based upon the existing story!

Smile 2, opening October 18th, continues that haunting tale, this time following pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) who now encounters the infamous and disturbing Smile curse just before her world tour. But this won't be the end of that curse. What Parker Finn Says About The Future of Smile

Finn spoke about how he envisions future Smile movies. His comments regarding the future seem to indicate many possibilities, stating that more storytelling possibilities for Smile should come to pass. Here is the actual statement: "I do think that there are so many exciting places that Smile could go. For me, it's still always about wanting to do something thematically rich that's centered on character stories. I love where this film goes, and right now I'm excited for audiences to see Smile 2. Hopefully, if they embrace it, I think that there could be a really interesting future for Smile."

This comment is completely ambiguous! But it is promising. More movies definitely depend on how audiences embrace this second entry into this now successful and very intriguing film franchise; demonstrating that Smile can really thrive on these strong, character-driven storylines. And with many different possible future developments based on the characters shown so far. The sequel has many opportunities to expand into some really interesting horror themes.

Smile 2's Cast and Future Storylines

Smile 2's cast consists of both returning and brand-new characters adding much greater complexity to the overall story, including a return from many already shown earlier in the first entry of the franchise. This suggests greater creative vision. These additions alone offer a strong foundation that creates a deep canvas upon which additional plots can develop! This potential greatly increases based upon the fact that the positive reception for Smile 2 greatly surpasses that achieved with the original movie.  Many reviews praise its increased improvements over the original movie! The very possibility and expectation for a larger scale project, involving many characters expands based upon audience reactions alone and the critical reception!

Kyle Gallner (Joel) returns; his encounter with the terrifying Smile Entity was shown at the original Smile’s ending;  Lukas Gage (Lewis Fregoli) and Peter Jacobson (Morris) both create strong supporting roles, especially Lewis who tragically transfers the curse.  Those three characters could play large roles if properly integrated, as these plots could be used in sequels. They provide incredibly powerful points upon which future movies can easily and naturally expand. All these potential characters mean more stories are possible.  That makes sequels really likely! Those box office returns could prove that more Smile movies totally work.

What We Think: Possible Directions for the Smile Franchise

While there’s huge uncertainty, we can at least speculate: Finn's comments certainly hint at wider possibilities; and several possible options remain likely to become actual possibilities for that eventual storyline. For example:  What about Skye’s potential influence as a pop star; how exactly that influence would spread that curse – turning her concerts into complete nightmare scenarios – and if she successfully survives the curse’s events; this generates even more opportunities.

A successful sequel sets the stage for this incredibly fascinating expanding horror universe with plenty of narrative potential!  Many options, making for very, very intense potential horror!

With strong plots and successful sequels, Smile could easily dominate the horror genre.
