Given other Star Wars tales about Darth Maul showing him emerging from the shadows to kill a Jedi trainee while he and Palpatine were still in hiding, and Count Dooku killing Yaddle only a few years later, this makes perfect sense. Killing a Jedi helps one prove themselves to be worthy of becoming a Sith, but it also generates another aspect of Sith personality.
Though many facets of the Sith in Star Wars have changed under the new canon, the most likely source of red Lightsabers is definitely While in canon the red coloration only comes from bleeding Kyber Crystals as a process of imbuing one's own anxieties and evil energies into a previously normal crystal, in Legends red lightsabers were fueled by artificial kyber crystals. Becoming a Sith requires this, and it also relates to the acolyte demonstrating their worthiness procedure.
An acolyte has to prove themselves by murdering a Jedi, but they also specify killing one without a weapon. Also emphasized seems to be Jedi not drawing their weapons first, too.
