Far from the first legendary powerhouse hauled off the board in this new Ultimate Universe is Captain Marvel. Although strong Marvel characters like Black Bolt or the Sentry have already been slain in this new universe, readers have not anticipated Captain Marvel to fall so readily. Serving as a pilot and spy years before she even acquired her powers far into adulthood, Carol Danvers is among Marvel's most disciplined heroes. These clearly aren't the heroes fans know and love if even Ultimate Captain Marvel is twisted by the Maker's activities.
Among Marvel Comics' toughest-willed characters and among the best heroes on Earth-616 is Captain Marvel. Tony Stark's farewell words to his absent father later in this particular issue contend that the Maker has essentially physically twisted the moral arc of the universe at a basic level, not simply modified time. And Carol's passing as well as the deaths or rejections of so many other legendary heroes most surely supports this case. The odds are stacked against the Ultimates higher than anybody imagined, after all, since even Earth's Mightiest Hero isn't suited to ascend to her due place in this new continuity - even unintentionally dragging innocents with her in an uncontrollably explosive blast of energy.

Looking at Captain Marvel and his other failed recipients across time, Tony notes, "It looks like only one or two took." The remainder all died, intercepted, or turned aside. A - a lot of superpower accidental suicide. But it appears Carol traveled in company.

Should even her variant prove unable of assimilating to the new reality of Earth-1610, Iron Lad, Captain America, and the rest of the team will have their work cut out for them should they wish to permanently destroy the wicked Maker's Council. Whether the Ultimates can ever become heroes rivaling the height of Marvel's Avengers remains to be known, but either way, they will have to assemble without Captain Marvel.
